hi can anyone clear this up as there is different views posted all over this site.

Does the bottom hose of the radiator get hot under normal operating conditions , this is the hose that comes from the thermostat housing and goes to the bottom of the radiator, or will it only get hot when the engine is under pressure, ie going up a hill or going over 65 mph ?

Any views are welcome

In my experience with the 1.9tdi engine the bottom hose rarely gets hot, in fact, at this time of the year (November), the top hose only barely gets hand hot (cold radiator), unless its been working really hard and long. Basically the Tdi's are so efficient, that the cooling provided by the internal heaters (and piping to - remember the long runs under the car to the rear heater) is sufficient. Edited by seatkid

Hi there

The bottom hose carries the cooled water back to the engine from the radiator, so even at normal operating temperature it will be barely warm, this is assuming everything is running correctly ie, water pump, radiator.
