I was parked up this morning with the engine running when i noticed a lot of white smoke comming from a small pipe under rear passanger door from what ive read its the glow pulg in the booster heater at fault please can someone give me a idia how to remove the heater test glow plug ect...

look in the faqs in the tech section,allow a few hours to read through the thread I KID YOU NOT:rolleyes:

in the mean time remove fuse 12,thats what i have had to do only a few days ago,but mine is a mk2 o3 reg,they are no doubt different between mk,s, so i do recomend you reading up on it,there is LOADS of info on here.

thanks mines the mkII just wandering if any ones serviced this unit and if theres any tips i think i will be removing fuse 12 good tip

Go to the FAQ section number 1 then straight to page 6 there's detailed instructions with pictures for cleaning and changing glow plug

After lots of running around on this site i tryed google and found this that shows how to remove the unit and how to replace glow plug.

Im not sure who wrote it but I would like to thank them and i hope they dont mined me posting it here....

I striped down the heater today to fit new glowplug only to find i had the wrong replacement after removing the old one i attached it to 12v and it heats up dos this meen the glow plug is ok.

The new plug is rpd8360 and seems to have a push fit connector not a bolt on like mine it was only about 7 quid so i wasnt convinced it was right but was assured i can change it if it wasnt correct.

on the up side removal and refitting if quick and easy even with the odd seized torx screw took less that an hour and half.

hi i didnt meaure it but i would say the plug in total size was aprox 2" the element was 3/4" bolt on +/- connection.

thanx m8,thats about the same as mine,

 

so can someone plz explain to me(numpty)how long the bit that heats up/burns is on a new 1,and how do you tell if the old one is nakered?

My old knackered one still lit up, but it wasn't at the tip it stayed black at the end and glowed a bit further down. If I reset the codes with VCDS then it would work for a few days but then would have to many flame out errors and would lock out.

 

I fitted the newer type plug to replace it, the old one had a terminal on the back to connect the wires to it, so you screwed it in then used the old wires. The new revised plug (which is supposed to last longer) had the wires fixed to it out of the packet, you had to use a long reach socket to install the plug with the wires pushed inside the socket. Then you had to remove the old wires from the multiplug by pushing out the pins, then you had to push in the new pins. This revised plug was about
