SimonK Posted October 24, 2010 Report Posted October 24, 2010 Hi, I just wonderd if I might ask a question. I am the owner of a 54 plate 1.9 TDi and i believe it has the 150bhp ASZ1 Engine ( well according to the log book) What im wondering is if i am to buy a new set of plugs for it, Im guessing that the fact it is the ASZ1 will make a big difference? I dont want to buy the wrong ones. Also any recomendations for online parts? Many Thanks S Quote

Many Thanks S I suggest you check Euro Car Parts web site = they have the facility where you put your Reg number in and it then lists the parts for your vehicle. By the way are the glow plugs messing about - why do you want to change them? Regards BJ Quote
SimonK Posted October 25, 2010 Author Report Posted October 25, 2010 Hi, thanks for the reply, Last winter the coil light began flashing and i also noticed that the car wasnt so keen to start in the cold weather. When I took the car for its service i mentioned it and I was told that it was probably one weak plug causing the problem. I was then quoted an awful lot of money to locate and replace the one weak plug. I left it as i couldnt really afford it at the time, but now as the cold weather approaches i think it be best to sort it. Iwas just going to replace all 4 then I at least know they are all good. Any other idead would be appreciated. Im willing to have a go at most things just need a little direction :) Many thanks Quote

Be carefull these get very hot very quickly hold plug with pliers or place in a vice, if they are working they will glow red in a few seconds. Also be wary of buying cheap plugs on ebay, use GSF or Euro car parts, dealers will be dearer. seatkid Posted October 25, 2010 Report Posted October 25, 2010 54 seems a bit young for glowplug problems. Dont know if things have changed from a MK1, but a flashing glowplug light is used as a general warning of some problem detected by the ECU - often it is signalling a faulty brake light switch (dual device used for other things as well as brake lights) Are you sure you just dont have a tired battery? On your car I believe you have to remove the rocker cover to access the glow plugs. Quote
SimonK Posted October 27, 2010 Author Report Posted October 27, 2010 Hi Car has a new battery fitted. ( this week ) and light still flashing. I have got to get the rear pads changed, they were picked up as an advisory on the MOT but there seems to be a seperate warnign light for those. After removing the plastic cover from the engine, im sure its the glow plugs i can see stickng out the side of the block. ( well at least i was hoping it was..) Quote

Yup, they are a doddle to do on the PD engines - just pop off the plastic engine cover and there they are :) As seatkid says though the glowplug light doubles up as the MIL (Engine Warning light) - don't get consumed into thinking its a fault with the plugs, it could be any number of ECU codes that have put it on but again, the most common seems to be brake light lamps failed - get someone to check they are coming on when you brake!
