ggobin Posted October 20, 2010 Report Posted October 20, 2010 Hi Guys - i recently fixed my aux heater (thanks to this forum ), after fixing the connector, and replacing the glow plug, clearing the fault codes using VAGCOM the heater now works  My concern/question is that i understand the heater should not be working if the coolant is up to temp? - i drive for about 45mins at a time down the motorway and when i park up i can hear the aux heater running. should this be the case? Also if i turn the ignition on when cold i can feel the run on water pump working (well it vibrates a little) but when i switch the engine off i do not hear/feel the run on pump working at all . I understand that this should run for 2 mins or so?. So my question is : is this normal - is there any way for me to check the correct operation - do i have a faulty pump or sensor? Many ThanksGary Quote

Many ThanksGaryHi thereWell done on getting it running. To answer your questions the only thing that will completely turn off your heater is the outside air temp sensor which is located on the wiper linkage at around 10 deg c + or turning off the engine. The heater will continue to at full power (5kw) till about 88 deg at which point the internal temp sensor puts it into a lower output mode about (2kw) The run on pump should start up a few seconds after switching on ignition or starting engine and will continue to run all the time the engines running regardless of heater settings or outside temperature, and as you say should run for a few minutes and then switch off. So if your car's done 80.000mls + it's probably in need of new brushes or new pump. So to summarise yes it is normal to hear the heater running continuous in cold weather Quote

Thanks againGaryHi GaryCheck out number 54 in the FAQ section for details on repairing the pump I don't think the correct brushes are easily available so you will have to file down new brushes to fit  Quote
gregers Posted October 20, 2010 Report Posted October 20, 2010 (edited) yep agree. rob, beg, steal brushes from an old drill or whatever and gently pare them down to fit.done this twice now,1st time i was a bit over zealous with the sanding down so the brushs didnt last long this time i done it properly.
