I have a 1.9TDi Ghia 130bhp Galaxy. Recently it has started to judder between 40-50 mph. If I accelerate past 50 mph, the juddering disappears. The fault is intermittent and engine temp makes no difference, neither does how hard I accelerate.

Also, the gearbox has always made a metallic whining noise when accelerator is released. This may or may not be related.

Anyone got any ideas?

Is it engine juddering or vehicle 'wobbling'. My wobbling at high speeds was solved with a nice smile to a chap at quickfit. He did something to the tracking, but I had a cup of tea.

Best to check wheel balance first (swap rear and front tyres if you dont want to spend money)

Other possibilities are CV joints, DMF (Dual Mass Flywheel) although these probably would be felt all the time or at a wide range of speeds.

Is the "juddering" an engine thing or a mechanical drivetrain thing?

Gear box main shaft bearing end float might be the reason for the whine.

I have a 2004 1.9tdi 115 bhp 242,000 miles on the clock and it appears from what you are describing is that it's the cv joint. mine is in the garage as i type having yet another fitted (under warranty) this will be the third in just over 12 months!!! can't remember how much they are but labour is minimal as it only takes my mechanic about 20mins max to swap them over.

Hope this helps

Cheers

Dave
