hi all - sorry to bring another aux heater problem to the table :)

 

I have a 53 1.9 TDI Ghia, I have had the car since feb 2010 but I wanted to ensure my aux heater is working before the winter so I decided to check it.

 

When I connect using vagcom I ran the scan for the modules etc - but when I select aux heater module it tells me that the module cannot be contacted :(

 

any ideas/suggestions?

 

(i am assuming i have the correct address on vagcom)

Hi there

Is it just number 18 module you cannot connect to? do other modules connect OK.

You may have a configaration problem with your Vag-Com.

 

You can bridge the terminals of the temperature sensor (attached to wiper linkage) to check and see if your heater will run.

I would suggest its probably not working and the previous owner has pulled the fuse for it. Check the fuses (can't remember the numbers off the top of my head) and I reckon you'll find a missing one, hence no communication.

Thanks for the reply - yes vagcom can talk to other modules, i will double check the fuses (pretty sure they were all there) - i assume the only fuse box in the one under the steering wheel?

 

The sensor by the filer - is this just 2 wire that just need shorting together to simulate low temp?

 

Any connectors/cables worth checking?

Hi again

The power supply for the heater is fuse 12 although several others are listed aswell depending on year and spec, your handbook should tell you for your car.

 

Yes to the sensor behind coolant bottle just unplug the sensor and link the 2 wires in the plug, then when you start engine heater should fire up regardless of outside temperature.

 

Also check the multiplug on the heater it may have been disconnected

 

Common faults with the heater are the glow plug and soot build up

It is but very restricted for space, you need small hands and a torch

 

I had the same problem and it was a broken wire at the multi conector at the heater, also needed to replace the glow plug

Hi - so i have checked all the fuses -all good, I did find the multi connector - could not see anything wrong, still can not see on vagcom <_<

 

Should i be able to see the controller in vagcom even if the temp is above 10c right?

 

Ian - thanks for the feedback - when you had the issue with the connection did you have a pin out to test the voltages on the connector of was there just a visible broken wire?

there was no visable broken wire, i used a multi meter and noticed there was power at the conector but none at the heater itself, found that the wire was broke at the conector but the insulation was still holding it on, also the conector was badly coroded inside so cut it out and joined the wires to totaly do away with the conector

Thanks Ian - i took the heater off and looked at the connector - and found one of the wires (red) split and corroded, managed to repair it and i CAN now talk to the controller using VAGCOM. <_<

 

Only issue i have now is that it is reporting a 01419 code - glow plug open circuit (i think) - any ideas?

 

Also the unit looks to be a D0HYA (not sure if i have the right code) - is this one that could be opened and a new plug replaced?

Not sure about the codes, take the glow plug out and replace and you will find the heater will kick into life, I removed the sensor up at the wipers and fitted a switch to it so can switch the heater on and off when I want.

Helps a lot <_< - i shorted out the sensor to test - but i like the idea of the switch - will order a glow plug from VW - unless if anyone knows is they can be purchased on-line.

on the matter of replacing the sensor with a switch, where is the best place to feed the wires through the bulkhead ? ive had a look but dont seem to see anywhere easy .

Cant remember where i put the wires through, didnt drill any holes, just pushed it through a rubber bung i think, as for the glow plug i removed it got the numbers from it and ordered it from a motor factors, dont tell them what its for just give them the make and number of the plug, way cheaper than vw, seat and ford.

when i did ours, every torx screw rounded off due to rust, you can get them seperate from vw dealers or i got a set from a eberspacher dealer along with a gasket set. they are very long screws if i remember, if i was doing another i would def get the 4 main screws to before i started. supose it depends how old the heater is and the weather its been exposed to.

hi everyone - sorry for the late update - i finally replaceed the glow plug on the aux heater (after being sold the wrong onen :D ), cleared the faults and tested again with the temp sensor shorted. Finally it did spring to life (and hot) :D .

 

But i now notice that when i switch the ignition on - the complete climate control display flashes for about 10 seconds then goes back to normal - any ideas?

Yes - condenser needs replacing as it is leaking gas - vagcom confirmed low pressure, so cleared the fault to stop the display flashing and will keep it in econ mode until I can afford to replace the condenser. Thanks again Chris for your help :D
