Mirez Posted November 15, 2010 Report Posted November 15, 2010 The Run on pump's not electrically linked to the aux heater on the Galaxy, ie, the vehicle controls it not the heater so having it removed sadly won't be the cause. They are very quiet when new but are still easily heard with the bonnet open just after switch off - if its not working then tap it and it then it may start up, a sure fire sign that the brushes have gone. sotal Posted November 15, 2010 Report Posted November 15, 2010 Others have said they hear theirs and they're really noisy etc, I can barely hear mine from the car, as I know it's there if I sit in silence I can just hear it. If I get out quickly and open the bonnet I can hear it quite well though. Easiest test is to pop open the bonnet then go and switch the keys on (don't need to start the engine) then you should hear the pump run after a short while. Then go and turn the keys off and it should carry on running. I did read something about newer models running for 3 minutes after switch off rather than 2 minutes Quote
wink Posted November 20, 2010 Report Posted November 20, 2010 Hi, I may have an issue with the run on pump, theres the paradox it does not run on. It is working with the ignition on, but goes off with ignition so does not run on, Can anyone confirm if this is correct 2005 130tdiWink Quote
davewill Posted November 26, 2010 Report Posted November 26, 2010 Pretty sure the run on pump is now the cause of my Aux Heater not working, as its as quiet as a Church Mouse under my bonnet when i switch on the ignition. No humming noise at all!! Does amyone know a rough cost for Frauds (or VW ) to replace the pump?? Cheers Dave Quote

daddyfixit Posted December 5, 2010 Report Posted December 5, 2010 just checked it, despite being -1 outside and yesterdays rain has frozen solid !! parked car on driveway (slightly sloped by the way) removed surfboard for access (filled strut tops with wd-40). got connector off to confirm feed/earth ok, so gave it a few knock with pliers as best as i could----it started making a noise and was vibrating !!!!!engine was running to warm the car up. starting to assemble it feeling pleased with myself, i dropped a washer off the bolt so turned around to get a magnet to retrieve it from along side oil filler cap were it was stuck. walked back to the car, thinking why did i not park nearer garage to do this job??? carried on putting in last 10mm bolt in centre of bulkhead ---realised i was leaning forward a lot??? so i stood up and watched as the car carried on sliding down the slope tp towards the pavement ................ quite funny if you where watching, not funny to think the wheels are locked and the car is creeping away from you !!! just been out and emptied a salt mine all over drive and pavement outside as our local council is crap at doing any grit spreading, even on a main road!! lesson learnt is to chock wheels whenever its icy so car doesnt end up stuck against the gates! sotal Posted December 5, 2010 Report Posted December 5, 2010 daddyfixit - sounds like your brushes are worn out, the knocking will have got it working for then but I bet it will stop again. Our drive slopes down towards the house, we've had it a few times where we get out of the car and shut the door to then watch the car slide down the drive a few feet - quite scary really Quote
shepheap Posted January 28, 2011 Report Posted January 28, 2011 My run-on pump is also silent (aux heater keeps trying to start and cuts out (already changed plug etc)).Happy to have a go at changing the brushes - can someone tell me which brushes I need to buy from ebay as ideally I will only remove the motor once for the repair. Thanks Quote

ThanksBrushes are not easily available its common practice to rob brushes from a small motor and file then down to fit, or maybe a starter/alternator repair shop may have some to fit.Can be a bit fiddly to do but if you have the time you can save yourself a few quid, or if you want a quick fix, GSF and Europarts are cheaper than the dealers, iirc about Quote

pauls ghia Posted January 28, 2011 Report Posted January 28, 2011 Shepheap,I used these brushes from ebay - search for item number: 110603767470They are a bit big all round, so I shortened them with a junior hacksaw and rubbed them on a coarse file to size and then shaped the ends. Try to keep them square! They are also very brittle!I also drilled two small holes in front of the brush holders and pushed pins through to retain them in place.Test the pump before refitting, just a quick buzz. You may want to use jubilee clips instead of the originals.I also removed the expansion bottle and changed the fuel filter, engine temp sender (vag-com flagged as faulty) and pollen filter at the same time.Plenty of room when already stripped out.Paul Quote
daddyfixit Posted January 28, 2011 Report Posted January 28, 2011 brushes ended up measuring 5mm square and about 10mm long, my wires came out the side of the brush. use a hacksaw blade to cut a slot in the end for the pressure spring to locate.you can file them to fit the commutator by wrapping a piece of emery paper around a screwdriver shaft!! look on website sgaf, press translate button---very good pictures and instructions, i read it a few times first . its been working for about 3 weeks since i replaced them, its just my heater thats took the knock............
