Acheivable Mpg

Hi all, saw in the local papers that manufacturers claims to mpg are unachievable

In my galaxy 2.0tdi with 4 people and luggage i can never get more than 45 mpg and extra urban is never greater than 43 mpg

I thought i would get more mpg on a long run,

Ooooh, my favourite subject. I have just maxed out my mpg capability, scoring a whopping 32.7mpg, having zeroed the computer right before hitting the motorway. Makes me feel better anyway.

I thought i would get more mpg on a long run,

hello i have an 07 1.8tdci and 4 up with luggage i get over 45 mpg on the motorway (if the comp is to be believed)but on 3/4 (just over 11 gallons) of a tank i get over 500 miles combined. on our recent camping trip to cornwall from sunny leicester we managed over 650 miles on a tank of fuel. which compared to my 1.8 focus which i was proud of doing over 30 mpg is amazing. for a laden mpv with tent and family and massive tent and family dog thats a impressive consumption. my only tip is changing the air filter regularly to keep consumption figures.

Had to drive 6 adults 60 miles and got 45mpg - not driving particularly carefully. There are not many large cars which could do that kind of mileage carrying 6 adults - well done Ford!

i get 46mpg average per tank. i get over 650 miles per tank. it's all down to the weight of your foot! i can do a 22 mile stretch from lincoln to coningsby and average over 60mpg if i try hard! loads of junctions and no dual carriageway etc. takes learning...

I get about 49mpg normally and 45mpg fully loaded - which I'm really pleased with. My A4 Avant 2.0 TDi only did 42mpg on average!

Oh, it's a smashing car - I really shouldn't moan. I don't do many miles, so wasn't bothered about the mpg until I bought it and realised how frighteningly low it really is. I can skirt around just under 30 doing the school run, so I'm not crying when I'm at traffic lights anymore. Other than the mpg I have NO issues with the car - sound as a pound, a few nicks here and there, but my kids probably did that anyway. Can't fault it. Even the insurance was a cracker, I'm 29, fully comp, and it was cheaper than on my old Punto (1.2 ELX!). I'm sure they will try to recoup some cash at renewal time... ;)

No as im on the speed limit the whole way. I'm an ex motorcycle road racer so i dont do slow! Its all down to how heavy you are with your feet. So many people accelerate on and off the pedal all the time when theyre meant to be at a constant speed and slow down unneccessarily for corners causing more fuel to be used up regaining speed whilst they accelerate. Keep the momentum going and dot keep the throttle on right up to a junction. The car slows naturally.

I've had my 2.0 TDCi for a month and got 49mpg doing long journeys - I confirmed this when I refilled the tank. More recently I have been getting 44mpg, not driving very carefully and doing short journeys fast. I have an early 2008 model so the official mpg is around 35 - 53mpg so I'm doing okay. The newer model 2.0 does around 3mpg more but the 0-60 is a whopping 0.1 second slower!

For my typical journeys the best so far is 56.7MPG (measured using fuel at the pump rather than the on-board computer) and I covered just over 800miles before filling up again.

 

However this can quite easily fall to the mid-40s if I am heavy with the right foot.

 

I tend to find the computer over estimates by 2 MPG.

 

I use BP Ultimate too.

Evening Smilge, Sorry to be a bit thick, but what is a PCM. On an earlier post you state that you get 37mpg towing a caravan. Can you please please give me some tips. We tow our van all over and I cannot get 30 per gallon. Ist november we are off to southern spain for the winter with the van, so any advice on getting more to the gallon will be most appreciated.

Whatever the PCM is, I must have upset it, as today a miracle has happened. On a 30 mile journey to birmingham, at 70mph on the motorway, it gave 45.4 to the gallon. On the return journey, at 58mph in cruise control, an astounding 53.7 to the gallon. The Ford God must have heard my plea. Lets hope this good fuel consumption continues. will save me a fortune.

We tow our van all over and I cannot get 30 per gallon. Ist november we are off to southern spain for the winter with the van, so any advice on getting more to the gallon will be most appreciated.

I really don't know how people get the same fuel consumption time after time when towing as it fluctuates so much due to various factors such as wind direction, road conditions, inclines etc. With our present car, a C4 Picasso, the consumption ranges from 24.8mpg to 36.2mpg at best. I believe that the Picasso has the same engine as the 2.0l Diesel Titanium X I have on order so I expect somewhere near the same.

 

All of my last three cars, 2 Citroens and a Peugeot have regularly given me better than the manufacturer's consumption figures,

I have had my 2010 2.0 diesel 140 Powershift model for a month now and done about 1000 miles (it is 3 months old and had 3000 miles on when i got it)

 

I have tried driving it as carefully as i can (in terms of right foot power) and have managed 38.6mpg on a 50 mile A road and Motorway journey using cruise control as much as possible. Around Town the average is about 32mpg at the moment

 

Its certainly not as good yet as my old 2006 Mkll 1.9Tdi 115 Auto Gal, so i hope the PCM quickly learns my driving style and gives me more MPG
