Hi

My oil warning light has started flickering on and off when engine is idling, normally occurs when pulling up at junctions or parking. It does not come on when driving under normal conditions. Oil level is always ok and changed every 10,000 miles.

I have checked switch connector for any obvious loose wires but all ok.

Any Ideas. Car is a 1998 Ford Galaxy with 120,000 miles on the clock

Okay,

Start with the obvious - find the pressure sensor - pull connectors off - give it a good clean. Still doesn't sort ti - change the oil pressure sensor.

If still no joy.

I take it you have made sure there is not excess back pressure when you take off the oil filler cap and your EGR pipes are unblocked. EGR pipes being bunged up can do weird things. If all this seems fine.

Time for a pressure test on each cylinder. If one cylinder is suspect - tie for a strip down and sort out that cylinder.

If all fine - then the last thing to check is - is the oil pump not well. I would suspect main delaer for this one. I am not sure if it is a servicable item on the Galaxy without an engine rebuild.

It must be 25 years since I saw a oil pump go on a well maintained car.

Happy days

Thanks for your replies. Its a 2.3 petrol auto. I've checked the wiring already so I'll see if I can source a new switch. I presume these are just screw thread into the block.

Thanks

Tried changing pressure sensor yesterday. Absolute pig to reach from underneath. Had to use universal joint on extension bar to get at it. Ended up snapping top off new one,as it seemed a bit tight in the thread, luckily it was only 4 quid. Put old one back for now. May be easier to get at it from the top if I take all the manifold off. has anyone ever changed one of these with engine in situ. Replacement part from Europarts was a slightly different shape on top with longer thread where wire connects. This made it difficult to get standard 23mm socket on.

Many thanks
