This happened a couple of times over the weekend...the Galaxy (2002 1.9tdi) would loose power and start slowing down, you would have to drop through the gears trying to keep the revs up, but it was getting more and more sluggish and not maintaining speed.

Both times the car had been going for at least an hour, so the engine wasn't cold. Both times were on motorways..the first time we pulled into a service station, left her for half an hour, then she was fine when we started her up. The second time was on an exit slip road...while we queued at lights we turned the engien off, then back on again, and she was fine...

I guess I'm going to have to book her into a Ford garage to get her looked at, but any thoughts on what it might be?

cheers!

Hi there

Sounds like it's going into limp mode which is being reset every time you stop and restart.

Is the car serviced regularly ie oil air fuel filters?

If they are OK you really need to have codes read, may make diagnosis easier as there is quite a few things that will cause loss of power, ie vacuum control piping split/perished faulty MAF sensor faulty/loose injector wiring, clogged turbo/EGR valve.

Have you had the glow plug light flashing or staying on recently.

There are loads of posts on this problem - almost certainly a sticking VNT on the turbo.

Cheers Chaps...she gets serviced regularly, just had one a couple of weeks ago in fact. looks like I will have to beook her into my local dealership and part with vast amounts of money...

BTW - whats a VNT?

cheers

Thanks...will go find my manual to see where that all is and how to get to it.

If it is the VNT, is that a big expensive job to fix?

I wouldn't go anywhere near a dealer to sort that out. Check on all the posts here first -power loss or limp mode should find them. A dealer will diagnose a faulty turbo, charge

Had a similar thing about 8 months ago - 2.3 petro galaxy - called AA and he said it was a blocked CAT - he banged it - sounded dull - took it to the Mani agents , fitted new cat and hey presto!

The crappy stufff poured out like dust - apparently the honeycob had disintegrated and the engine pressure was forcing the crap to fill the holes - thus suffocating the car!

Might be worth trying...

It'll be the VNT. Check the fault codes - Charge Pressure Positive Deviation - Intermittant or something similar.

Thanks for the replies all

I assume to check the fault codes I need to take it to a Ford specialist, a general car repair place would not have the right equipment?

cheers

most garages will have fault code readers or any auto electrician can do the job both will be cheaper than main dealer
