Hi

in theory it should do but in practice rarely, with the aid of hand primer pump or an old lift pump which you can temporarily place in the feed pipe from the tank to the fuel filter.

That will allow you to pump diesel from the tank through the filter and the injection pump.

hi again

the hand primer that should be easily available from a scrappy would be from a p reg peugeot 306 1.9 diesel or citroen zx 1.9 diesel or any old mechanical lift pump.

You may have to get some tubing to adapt the hand primer to fit your car, but once you have got it you will find it very usefull when you change fuel filter, saves all the endless cranking of the starter, have ignition on when priming this will ensure stop solenoid is in run position.

Hi again

Could be drawing in air, check pipe connections on filter and inlet connection on injection pump, you could try temporarily bypassing the fuel filter, also can you feel the injection pump sucking if you disconnect inlet pipe and put a finger on the pump connection while someone cranks engine?
