GalaxyHomeMechanic Posted May 31, 2010 Report Posted May 31, 2010 All, I think I need to replace my brake Master Cylinder on my Mk II 1.9l TDI Ford Galaxy (brakes work, but pedal slowly moves towards the floor). I have searched and searched this excellent site but cannot find a procedure to replace it!! I see a few comments of "...I replaced my brake master cylinder..." as if it were a standard job, but looking at the engine bay and considering how hard it was to simply fill up the brake fluid reservoir, I am not so sure. Thanks - would appreciate any advice!! Regards,Jon Quote
chrispb123456 Posted May 31, 2010 Report Posted May 31, 2010 (edited) Hi thereYou need to remove the scuttle plate and air filter housing to have best access to master cyl, this also gives access to the pollen filter which is always worth doing while plate is removed. <_< see link below http://www.fordgalaxy.org.uk/ford/index.ph...l=pollen+filter Edited May 31, 2010 by chrispb123456 Quote
GalaxyHomeMechanic Posted June 1, 2010 Author Report Posted June 1, 2010 Chrispb, You make it sound so simple!! What is the "scuttle plate"? And I think the link you posted is for a Mk I - is it a similar procedure for the Mk II? And do you need to drain the reservoir through one of the nipples on one of the calipers? Thanks. chrispb123456 Posted June 1, 2010 Report Posted June 1, 2010 Hi thereIf I made it sound simple I apologize, believe me there are a lot worse than that. The pic shows the three bolts you need to remove the scuttle plate, the rubber strip just pulls off, don't loose the two small pieces of foam at each end.Just drain off enough fluid to empty the container don't drain the cylinder you don't need excess air to enter system.Stuff some old rags around base of fluid reservoir then pull reservoir off master cylinder letting the remainder fluid soak into rags.dispose of fluid soaked rags carefully you wont want fluid on your paintwork. Now you can undo the pipes and mounting. You will need to bleed brakes fully on reassembly. :) Quote
