koro Posted May 18, 2010 Report Posted May 18, 2010 Hi, I have done a search on flashing preheat symbol in dash.. From it, I realised that my rear brake lights arn`t working, pointing towards a faulty brake light switch... It has never been replaced, 110,000m on the clock My question is, that on mine the high level brake light works fine, could the brake switch still be faulty? I have also tapped up a couple of wires in the boot thingy, where you open the boot. Many Thanks Quote

mk2vr6 Posted May 18, 2010 Report Posted May 18, 2010 ok lets look at this logically :D the high level brake light works when you put your foot on the brake pedal? ok so from that we can deduce that the brake pedal switch is working? and as the brake lights are not mounted in the tail gate? we can rule out the possibility of broken wires! so that leaves........ nope got me there! no I'm back with it...the pixies that light the candles in the light units have gone on their holidays ;) Quote

The preheat on the dash is comes on constantly after about 20 secs, when I did a search I read about the light switch. Then had a look at the sharan and saw that I had no rear brake lights.... except for the high level working... So do you think that it is possible for the switch not to be faulty because of this? gregers Posted May 18, 2010 Report Posted May 18, 2010 think what he is trying to say is,YOUR BULBS ARE BLOWN :D Quote
mk2vr6 Posted May 18, 2010 Report Posted May 18, 2010 yes ;) start simple check the bulbs and work your way back through the circuit, you know the circuit has power and the switch works due to the high level one working, not all problems are major ones :D Quote

I always thought that a bulb if blown would look obvious,,,assume sums it up... Many Thanks everyone Quote
Mirez Posted May 19, 2010 Report Posted May 19, 2010 Good news! Just to clarify why this is - the rear stop lights are filament lamps which draw 21Watts. The third brake light is made of LED lamps which probably consume less then 2Watts hence. Its this difference as to why it will "see" a fault with both brake lamps out but not with the LED one. Quote

Thanks for that clarification, makes a little more sense to me now... Still cant fathom out how the fillaments on both bulbs, looked to be in perfect condition yet faulty.. ;) Quote
