wints Posted April 26, 2010 Report Posted April 26, 2010 Hi there, I have a 1.8 Focus zetec on a 54 plate and for the last few days or so it stalls when i stop at a red light,at junctions and it seems like it wants to stall when I start the car. Now the engine management light has come on but then goes off after a while any ideas what could be causing this problem? thanks for any suggestions Quote
insider Posted April 27, 2010 Report Posted April 27, 2010 Petrol or diesel? The fact that the engine light is coming on means that it's logging a fault code. If you can get this read then it should indicate your problem. Quote

Thanks for the reply its petrol engine sorry forgot to mention that, ok heres the latest with this problem read just about everything realated to this problem but all suggestions have not worked for me list of what i have changed below Plugs HT leads Coil pack MAf sensor ICV sensor Injectors and rail Hose at back of inlet manifold and still got these problems Erratic idle, stalling when braking, lack of power got a mate to hook his scanner and its coming back with a missfire on 1 and 3 cylinders compression test we ran was ok, any ideas as to what could be causing this? cheers for any insights Quote
wints Posted May 7, 2010 Author Report Posted May 7, 2010 Well put a second hand PCM on it and had it keycoded and its still the same, really runing out of ideas and things to try now anyone with any suggestions? cheers Quote
chrispb123456 Posted May 8, 2010 Report Posted May 8, 2010 Do you get any noises from the hydraulic tappets, oil changes need to be done regular on these engines, they need the 5W-30 synthetic oil. If the tappets get blocked that can cause uneven running, tappet noise, insufficiant valve clearence can cause valves to burn out. Quote

Don't know if this is still current...... 1) Zetec-E engines from 6/98 (Blacktop) had many engine modifications, including solid cam followers (tappets), so apart from the oil viscosity the above is incorrect.2) When you changed coil/leads/plugs did you leave them installaled ?3) Have you physically and electrically checked the whole harness and cleaned connectors from engine through to PCM?4) Checked the clutch switch and harness/connectors back to the PCM? TD1947 Posted August 2, 2010 Report Posted August 2, 2010 HI, not sure if still needed for this post, but I DID experience a mysterious misfire on 2 cylinders on my 1.8 zetec Focus. The problem was flash-over, on TWO of the plugs. These were all new plugs, and the problem was introduced (self inflicted if you like!) after using a cheap tool to replace them. I did not know that the plug-spanner had nasty rubber internal grip - for gripping the top of the plug - and it had a high metallic content, leaving black lines on the porcelain. This changed to a hard track line, once a few misfires occurred. Tick-over was OK, pull-away was awful. I fixed it by removing and cleaning all plugs (with a better plug spanner), and putting MAPLIN SILICONE GREASE on the porcelain parts, and any area in the plug dwell likley to hold moisture (Clean and blow clear with an air-line first). This stuff is used in HIGH VOLTAGE/EHT systems like CRT tube areas that have 20 to 30KV present, so is ideal on car ignition flash-over issues. Mine has been fine since I did this 18 months ago. TD. xavier Posted January 27, 2014 Report Posted January 27, 2014 I had this on my focus. Would also lose power periodically on the m-way and the speedo would drop to zero, then come back after 20 secs or so. Turned out to be the speed sensor in the gearbox (apparently a common fault). worth a google further anyway. Garage I took it to tried cleaning the connectors as sometimes that's the problem but it still happened, was fine after sensor replaced. Oops, just realised the date, hopefully this helps someone, sometime... Quote
gregers Posted January 28, 2014 Report Posted January 28, 2014 every little gem helps someone, even if it is 4 years ago. Quote
