Hi, Got a problem with my 1997 2.3 ghia, Seems ok round town, still get a problem but its not as bad. I can drive around then come to stop or slow down and find not much engine drag, put my foot on the clucth and it will idle at around 1100 rpm,It wont drop to 900 rpm till i completely stop! On going on a run up the motorway last night when on the slip road again not much engine drag or breaking, again put my foot on the clucth and it sat at 2200 rpm till i came to a complete stop,It dropped alittle the slower i was going (1800 rpm)but cant work out whats going on.This problems always been there since i bought the car 2 weeks ago just seems alittle worse last night.

I've cleaned out the idle valve,I replaced the engine wiring on the top half of the engine ( to the coil packs,tp,crank, cam sensors ect) because of the cracked and missing inslution leaving bare wiring.Checked the throttle cable and all seems ok.Im at a loss what to do.

As i've unplugged all the sensors, injectors ect to replace the wiring would i have to disconnect the battery to reset everything? Or could it be a problem with maybe the speed sensor in the back of the gearbox, its on the same loom i replaced yesterday?

Its a real problem and danger with it not slowing down like it should.Again once off the motorway, after a few mins it behaves like im driving around town again.Any ideas please?

first thing i would check is the condition of ALL the vacuum pipes, check for perished or split pipes as well as blockages, if you are unsure if the fitting of the pipes is secure enough sling a cable tie around it to secure it.

Think i could be the idle valve as it was sticky and does not seem to sit in the same place everytime i move the piston.Have had it off and been watching what it does when the ignition is switched on and it does move. Will take it on a run after lunch and see what it does.

All the hoses look ok with nothing perished and all are tight.

Hi

Have never known an idle control valve to cause that, it usually has a lumpy slow tick over or just cuts out or stalls when you pull away.

Most likely to be vacuum leak from numerous pipes around intake manifold.

Throttle position sensor can cause this but not sure its on this model.

I've checked the hoses and cant find anything. Was even thinking of changing the inlet manifold gasket.

Anyway went out to test it again after cleaning the idle valve and nothing changed. Stopped before i got home and unplugged the air flow meter. It ran the same, no loss of power but when doing 30 to 40 mph,put my foot on the clutch and it would idle at 1000 rpm.Plugged it back in and the problem returned. Could this be it or is it just the ecm just re ajusting to the air flow meter not connected?

Right what i have found is a pipe outlet that has a Red plastic bung on it located at the back of the inlet manifold. Also found a pipe that looks like it connects to it,so i;ve taken off the plastic bung and connected the pipe,It ran very rough on tick over and was not great when revving it.So have put it back where i found it! Any idea what this is and could it be my problem?

Hi Leon

Where does the other end of that pipe go to? wondering if thats been disconected to compensate for the IAC seem to think they are spring loaded a bit like the EGR valve.

I will have a look see if I can find any pics of the pipework

Hello Chris and thanks

Not sure as it runs down the block to the bottom somwhere so i need to jack it up and get under it to see.Thats what i was thinking. Yes they have a spring on the piston.Seems to move ok and know it powers up but still could be u/s.Found one on Ebay for
