Exhaust Manifold Bolt Sheared

Hi all, I have a slight problem. :16:

 

I just taken off the down pipe exhaust from the manifold and in the process sheared one of the studs, i followed instuctions to lubricate the bolts before untightning but manage to break one. Does anyone have any tips on what i have to do next, theres about an inch left on the stud from the manifold

Hammer + penetrating oil (not WD40, stronger stuff) to free it up a bit and mole grips, would be my first attempt (because it's the cheapest! :16: )

shame you aint nearer,ive got a set of those aston super wrenches,like advertised on the shopping channel,BRILLIENT they are.

I've got some of them, I've never thought of using them on a snapped stud. Do they work well then?

I know it's a pain but take manifold off and heat up the flange, and as said soak with penetrating oil more chance of getting it out without snapping it again, and if it does snap you have already got it off to drill out.

[now that sounds like a huge task, i got the haynes manual and read about it , seems bigger than it is, just waiting on the penatrating oil then i can begin, thanks for your help :rolleyes:]

jayton,even the plumber at my work likes using them,obviously if any stud/bolt has snapped then you need to soak it with what ever oil etc necessary but i used them endless times to remove things like this,i bought mine at a boot sale. Edited April 24, 2010 by gregers

Here's a quick tip.

 

If there's a bit of stud exposed, tie a small piece of rag around it and douse it with penetrating oil. Leave overnight, the oil soaked rag keeps it damp and helps the oil soak down the thread before it has chance to dry out.

 

If the stud doesn't then come out easily, wiggle it backwards and forwards, adding more spray. If it doesn't feel like it's going to move, you might need some heat. Remember that the constant heating - cooling of the exhaust manifold softens the bolts, and they shear off quite readily.
