sorry title shout say2-3000 rpm

Hi every one first post on here

I have a 2001 2.3 and i have had a few engine troubles recently. The firts problem was a misfire on No3 three cylinder which came and went a few times.

The problem i am having now is that it the car is idling at 2-3000 rpm.

the first day this happened, once it got up to full temprature the idle dropped down to 750rpm and cut out once or twice.

also the first time it happened when i pressed the clutch the revs dropped but it has stoped doing that now.

I got the AA out tonight and he plugged his computer in to it but it could not find my car.

he thought it might be a stuck throttle boddy so he cleaned that but that didnt help.

after about an hours messing he thought it might be the idle air control valve as when he removed it there was no resistance in the valve. he thought this may be the problem but he wasnt 100%

Has any one had a problem like this before?

any help would be great as its driving me mad now

Hi Paul,

Did the AA guy actually clean your idle control valve? This is quite easy to do just flushing it through with a bit of carb cleaner spray. It may also be worth unplugging your MAF sensor to see if that is the culprit - the MAF-less settings should help you run better than you have been, if it has been giving out faulty readings.

Hi Paul welcome to the site

Usually a dodgy idle control valve causes a slow unstable tick over or engine keeps cutting out. Plugs and/or leads can cause misfires, check all vacuum hoses for splits and perishing there are a lot of them. Also check throttle cable and butterfly vavle

Hi mate i have the same car and if i unplug my MAF the engine will run like a bag of nails not better, my money is on the idle control valve as mentioned, very simple to remove and a 10 min job to clean out with carb cleaner etc.

just my pennies worth

best of luck

thanks for the replys

He cleaned both the throttle body and idle air valve but it made no difference.

he did say there was no resistance in the valve but he was unsure if it was ment to be like that on this model.

when i started it up this morning the revs went up to 3000rpm again. i popped the bonet and unplugged the cable on the idle control valve and the revs dropped down and it struggled to run at adle but it allowed me to take it to a friend of my dad who has the diagnostic stuff, he is going to look at it in the week and let my know for sure what it is.

will post up what it was when i get it back

Hi

As i said before IAC only controls idle speed, if you have a vacuum leak which could be a split or perished hose or inlet manifold gasket will give a high tick over speed, you need to look very closely at these pipes as some are very difficult to see, also the brake servo diapragm could be leaking with no noticable affect to braking.

we did check the pipes by spraying them but there was no change.

all these problems started when the car got very wet, not sure if this is just a coincence or not

Also i believe the misfire to be the coil as i have already change both the spark plugs and leads.

In the last week my galaxy 2.3 was doing the same i cleaned idle control valve, throttle body new leads and also changed coil pack high revving and still missing then i replaced a rubber hose behind exhaust manifold and all is OK again. There is a metal pipe that comes around by the thermostat from inlet manifold a rubber elbow each end the one behind exhaust manifold had perished on mine.
