Hello everyone Im a new owner of a galaxy 2.3 1998 ghia Ive only had it a week and Im into it all ready, the problem is that it has stopped charging the battery, Ive had two batteries on the car and the problem is still there, If I put my multimetre from the alt to the earth on the battery it reads 18 volts a bit high I know but when I put the metre across the battery I get 12 volts and it isent charging, I am going to clean the cable joint at the starter and clean up the earth. has anyone any ideas what could be the problem, I hope to god that its not the alt as it looks a barrel of fun to get it off. thanks for looking :(

That is way too high not just a bit high

also note for a 98 model use a standard Pb battery - not calcium - calcium battery will take more 5 hours to fully recharge

try not run car for long at 18v - it will damage the control units over time

It sounds like there is no connection from the alternator to the battery.

Check all connections again....especially the earth at both the battery and alternator.

Hi there I would be very surprised if you get away without changing Alternator in the long term, as Big Kev said sounds like alternator has become disconnected or bad connection, quickest way to kill an alternator :(

See if you can find my thread from about a year ago; look at the main cable from the alternator across the engine bay to the feed fusebox (not sure if the pre-facelifted models have this). The cable goes hard and unconductive. You may need new cable and feed fusebox, around
