tbag Posted April 20, 2010 Report Posted April 20, 2010 Hi all,our 2001 2.8 v6 has been replaced by a 1.9 tdi (130) on a 55 plate. This morning when i started her up there was a strange noise that seems to be behind the battery area and sounds like a small steam engine, chuff chuff chuff.this lasted for about 5mins then it was off and on at ten second intervals or so. can anyone explain what this is. thanks t bag. gregers Posted April 20, 2010 Report Posted April 20, 2010 your not hearing the booster heater or the run on pump are you?just a little bit of info on the forum about these 2, :( Quote
tbag Posted April 20, 2010 Author Report Posted April 20, 2010 the coolant run on pump on the v6 used to hum so i dont think its that but i did listen around the exhaust pipe under the body and the noise was near the engine, it was cold this morning so it could be booster heater.iwill try again tomorrow. thanks Quote
tbag Posted April 26, 2010 Author Report Posted April 26, 2010 The strange noise has gone but it has been warmer so it could be the booster heater.I plugged in my FCR and it came up with engine coolant temperature sensor g62 open or short to plus also aux heater glow plug for heater q9 static short circuit to earth. while scanning with ignition on i can hear the run on pump but when i switch engine off the pump does not appear to be running like it did on my v6. could all this be related. t bag Quote
chrispb123456 Posted April 26, 2010 Report Posted April 26, 2010 The booster heater is located under the car by the N/S/Rear passenger door makes a noise like a jet engine when its working properly, you wont here it when temp is above approx 10 deg c.The run on pump is behind and over the engine that would proberbly sound like its behind the battery.I would just clear the faults you have found if there's no other problem and see if they return at a later time. tbag Posted April 26, 2010 Author Report Posted April 26, 2010 I already cleared temp sensor and its back again, run on pump should still work after switching engine off but it is not.I cant tell if its working when motor is running because of engine vibes. We went up to preston yesterday round trip of 260 miles, pump still did not carry on after turning off, temp gauge was dead centre. would a faulty temp sensor or heater glow plug affect the pumps running? gregers Posted April 26, 2010 Report Posted April 26, 2010 if your run on pump isnt working there is a very detailed fix in the faqs in the tech section. Quote
tbag Posted April 26, 2010 Author Report Posted April 26, 2010 It works fine when i turn on ignition, u can feel it pumping but i cannot hear it when engine is turned off. Quote
chrispb123456 Posted April 26, 2010 Report Posted April 26, 2010 (edited) Hi again you can test to see if the pumps working by just switching on the ignition without starting, the pump should start after about 15 seconds then if you turn key off it should run for about 10 mins. this pump runs continuous all the time your driving, do you notice that the booster heater keeps stopping and starting also the rear heater keeps blowing cold.Mine packed up at 85,000 and I think youl'l find thats the norm.Check on the FAQ section for DIY repair usually brushes worn out Edited April 26, 2010 by chrispb123456 Quote
