Jayton Posted May 29, 2010 Report Posted May 29, 2010 I've just done the same, and the wind back tool is stuck. Do I need to turn the silver bit where the metal plate sits in to unwind down the thread and thus release the pressure from the plate? Quote
cyborg Posted May 29, 2010 Report Posted May 29, 2010 Ive been there staring at the brake and do feel for you .However try this Make sure you have some brake fluid to hand to top up the brake reservoir. The easy way I have found to do this is remove the 3 screws which hold the tray in engine bay as reservoir is behind air box. then find a tube about 10 inches long i used a spark plug tube and taped up the holes or a piece of rubber hose so you can pore the fluid into the reservoir Then you need to release the brake bleed nipple I used one of those carton's with a tube to attach to the nipple before i undid nipple that releases some pressure so you can wind and unwind to get the tool back out . It needs some perseverance to get the tool out but be rest assured it will. Quote
Jayton Posted May 29, 2010 Report Posted May 29, 2010 So just connect the bleed nipple up with the hose in a tub of brake fluid? I was going to do that but it started raining after I got the caliper & pads off and the fluid would have got contaminated :D So I undone the cap on the reservoir and turn the piston back in... and got stuck :( If I can get back to where I had to leave the car either tomorrow or Monday (The inlaws, about 7miles away) I'll try that. cyborg Posted May 30, 2010 Report Posted May 30, 2010 So just connect the bleed nipple up with the hose in a tub of brake fluid?Yes that would work the idea is not to let air get into system as I understand air in the abs pump is a real pain.so make sure there plenty of fuild in the reservour. Leave to cap off bleed the nipple . If you have some big mole grips try winding the disc on the windback tool inside the caliper, the bit that is'nt connected to the piston.hope that make sense. As a last resort before you get recon caliper or strip and put on vice ,try and wind the windback tool putting a socket on the windback tool might give it the nudge its needs. Quote
Jayton Posted May 30, 2010 Report Posted May 30, 2010 Cheers for that, we tried my breaker bar with 19mm socket on the end and it didn't budge :( I'll try your method before removing the caliper :D Quote
chrispb123456 Posted May 30, 2010 Report Posted May 30, 2010 Hi JayIf you are using the Laser tool you should only be turning the black winding handle clockwise to wind piston back in, if it's gone tight and you want to remove tool you need a 24mm spanner and wind the shiny knurled collar clockwise to release tool. You will find it easier to use the tool if you oil the thread before use.The caliper anchor bracket sliding pins can usually be cleaned up and greased once you get them out the bracket :D Quote
Jayton Posted May 30, 2010 Report Posted May 30, 2010 (edited) That worked a treat! Thank goodness it was a nice day :D It was still VERY tight and required my brother in law (BIG guy) and myself to wind it back in even further. Got another problem though, I'll update my other thread to keep this one on topic. Edited May 30, 2010 by Jayton Quote
