my friend has an 05 saab with the 150tdi engine in it and he s having some major probs with it. i know its a galaxy site but i was wondering if anyone could help? it only revs to 3000 rpm but takes about 5 secs to get there from idle. he says it also takes about 30 secs to get to 30 mph. not good. he has been using red diesel in it , i dont know if this could damage his engine or not but im sure it hasnt helped. all idea s more than welcome, cheers.

red diesel bloody hell,

unless its a farm vehicle, then id certainly be wearing brown trousers if he gets caught????

from what ive seen the custom and excise peeps take a very dim view.

but if he gets away with it then fair play.

does it have a maf?

wonder because of the fuel its sending the wrong info to the ecu or vice versa???

is the turbo working correctly?

turbo seems ok, no plooms of white smoke coming out the back. he s tried unplugging the air flow sensor but it has nt made any difference. my only theory is that the red diesel , being a lower octane and thus more dirty has completely blocked the egr valve so no air s getting to the engine hence the slow rev s and no power.

could a faulty maf cause this problem cos he said over the last few months its been making his engine managemet light come on . he s been giving it a "tap " to sort it out like there s a loose connection .

Really? I pay, you pay - what makes him so special? If he can afford an 05 saab he can afford to pay the duty like everyone else so personally I really hope he gets caught and C&E royally shaft him.

Anyway, all ECU car's need a MAF sensor and I would start there as the symptoms are characteristic of MAF failure. A failed turbo wouldn't stop it revving up but tbh there are a number of other problems that could cause this.

Blocked CAT

Blocked Air/Fuel Filter

Blocked/Dirty injectors

Any one of around 10 ECU sensors

to name a few. The trouble is garages are required to report the use of red diesel, if he puts it in for diagnostics, the staining may well get noticed.

Hi there sounds like a classic case of MAF sensor faulty cant condone use of gas oil as Mirez has said but providing it was clean there wont be any lasting effects, however it will take more than a few tankfulls to clear traces of the dye. ;)
