bigtee Posted March 29, 2010 Report Posted March 29, 2010 hi i drive an 01 115 bhp 1.9 tdi and i would like to know how to get 45+ mpg i never go over 2000 revs and the most i seem to get is 37, i find it hard to believe that a car so big can do so many miles on a gallon of diesel my diesel light comes on when i get to approx 380 miles and i have owned the car for 2 years and it is always the same mpg roughly ps i was told that i have 100 miles left when the light comes on,any tips would be appreciated Quote

The main things to "up" MPG are: 1) Regular Servicing2) Sheding weight3) Correct tyre pressures4) Driving style5) Journey conditions / time / Geography6) Speed and so many other things... Staying below 2000 isn't necessary a good idea, you may find more rev's with less acceleration will help in certain conditions and the occasional blow out will also help. Looking well ahead and predicting what will happen is the biggest tip for fuel saving, my regular style of driving would see my gal getting 30mpg, however I drive it gently (as its mine lol) and I normally get 37/8. If I concentrate hard I'll get it up to 45/6 mpg, maybe a little higher. I really wouldn't be worried with 37mpg! Quote
gregers Posted March 29, 2010 Report Posted March 29, 2010 i would defo give it an Italian tune every now and then especially if you do not rev it above 200 rpm. Quote

bigtee Posted March 30, 2010 Author Report Posted March 30, 2010 thanks guys i was just getting a bit worried because i read a post here once where people were getting 800+ miles on a tank of fuel and i was thinkin it would take me near 2 tanks to get that . thanks again ps love this forum Quote
Bigjeeze Posted March 30, 2010 Report Posted March 30, 2010 I have an average consumption of 44mpg - that is mostly all Motorway A road driving. If I am careful and stick to 55 -65mpg I can easily get that up to 50mpg but going anywhere takes so long!!!. I have discovered that i can fill up my tank with approx 75 litres and I can get 650 - 690 miles before the yellow light comes on - but it does vary. i am sure that in the winter the Aux heater uses a bit of fuel which will slightly distort the figures as will have the Air con on all the time ( which I do). 380 miles to a tank seems pitifully low to me. I would check my driving style making sure the engine doesn't labour but get it into top gear as soon as it can handle it. also no burning away from the lights (ha!) or hard accelleration etc should improve that figure. You don't say so but I suspect a lot of town driving may also be contributing. Quote
