swagger Posted March 22, 2010 Report Posted March 22, 2010 I noticed there were a few people talking about not having a spare wheel and using the gunk that comes with the car, i was lead to believe that these tyres would be unrepairable due to the gunk, i contacted the makers of the product and they said that the gunk CAN be cleaned out and tyres repaired, it is just down to tyre fltters NOT wanting to spend too much time on the clean out then repair of tyre, if you do need a replacement cartridge go to care4car.com they sell them there for Quote
zorgman Posted March 23, 2010 Report Posted March 23, 2010 ask one question, would i do a constant 70mph with a diy repair bung in as opposed to a proper inserted from inside glued bung.i carry the instant fix as i cant change tyre but my tyre place say no probs just supply them with some petrol to clean inside when i get it fixed proper Quote
Willie Krashitt Posted March 24, 2010 Report Posted March 24, 2010 A couple of things. 1/ Conti system:The Conti system I have (got it with my Focus) states in its literature that the tyre must be permanently repaired or replaced within 200km, and that the excess sealant inside the tyre will wash out with water. 2/ Repair plugs:I might well be wrong as tyres/puncture repairs aren't my area of expertise, but 2 years ago I had a puncture in France (more than 200km from home) and the garage there 'repaired' the tyre with one of these externally fitted plugs. I didn't likre the look of it, so finished the holiday running on the spare. When I got home I took the wheel to my local tyre shop and he stated that these type of bungs were illegal in the UK, only the mushroom type were allowed. Having removed the tyre, he gripped the "french" bung on the inside of the tyre with his fingers and the whole thing just came out without any effort! the 'glue' used had no effect whatsoever.Having seen that, and from what he said, I would never use the external type plugs on any vehicle. There are members on here who work in the tyre trade who may be able to confirm or refute the legality of this type of repair- would be good to know. George. Quote
swagger Posted March 24, 2010 Author Report Posted March 24, 2010 ask one question, would i do a constant 70mph with a diy repair bung in as opposed to a proper inserted from inside glued bung.i carry the instant fix as i cant change tyre but my tyre place say no probs just supply them with some petrol to clean inside when i get it fixed proper when you repair a tyre with a patch from the inside you are only closing the hole from the inside, travelling at 70mph in the rain will force water up the hole which was left from the nail/screw and put constant pressure on the patch, also water will ingress through the tyre and make the steel belt rusty, i must admit these plugs have been around for sometime, i used the in the 80s and had no probs, there is a mushroom type plug called stopngo and it is a better solution, .Yes your local tyre fitter will repair your tyre with the conti repair but what about if you are elsewhere,. i rang Kwikfit and National tyres and they wont touch them once you put in the liquid even though when i told the that i had contacted conti about this, they still refused. It is a dilemma that we shouldnt have to haver, Ford should put spare wheels in this vehicle Quote
