Seatdriver Posted March 16, 2010 Report Posted March 16, 2010 Hi, Can anyone tell me where the EGR valve is on a 1.9tdi 130bhp 2006 Alhambra. My car has developed a slight stutter and poor low acceleration. Also when decelerating in gear there is a whistle from the engine area that dissappears once revs drop under 2000rpm. Suspect as my car has only covered 29000 miles 90% round town driving this EGR valve may have choked up. What exactly does this valve do and how does it work? Is it better to disconnect or replace? Are there any links on this forum on how to replace it? Many thanks in advance Quote
Jayton Posted March 16, 2010 Report Posted March 16, 2010 The EGR helps with emissions and fuel efficiency. It recirculates exhaust gasses through the combustion process to reuse the unburnt fuel. The EGR should be in a similar position to the Golf's EGR:http://www.cincitdi.com/system/files/u1/enginebay.jpg Quote
zorgman Posted March 16, 2010 Report Posted March 16, 2010 right hand side rear of engine, just blank it off does no harm to engine will still pass mot and you wont get inlet full of carbon, mines being done 2.5 years, big mod this in states Quote
Seatdriver Posted March 17, 2010 Author Report Posted March 17, 2010 Thanks for the response, how do i blank off the EGR, do i need to buy a kit? thanks again Quote
Richard gal Posted March 17, 2010 Report Posted March 17, 2010 Thanks for the response, how do i blank off the EGR, do i need to buy a kit? thanks again Pull off rubber vacuum pipe and block, then cap the EGR pipe, or push ball bearing into pipe and refit, you may like to have a look inside the valve to see how coked up it is. PS. you will get better fuel econony as its using oxygen to burn fuel rather than CO2, and will pass the mot with less emissions. Quote
Jayton Posted March 18, 2010 Report Posted March 18, 2010 ermmm the EGR is there to reduce emissions by burning unburnt fuel, but diesels are not subject to MOT emissions tests like petrol cars are. Does everyone forget that diesels are not subject to emissions testing on MOTs? The MOT tester should only inspect the exhaust exit pipe for smoking, not hooking up an emissions tester :) You might also want to add an oil catch can which removes oil from the air circulation system.http://uk-mkivs.net/forums/t/145424.aspxhttp://uk-mkivs.net/forums/t/269734.aspx :D Quote
zorgman Posted March 18, 2010 Report Posted March 18, 2010 methinks that the egr valve is used only on over run cant fully remember but yes its called a smoke test on mot,yes just blank it off your engine will thank you for it and saves having to do a decoke on the inlet manifold. When i ported my heads and manifolds i blanked off both side and threw it in the bin, but just taking off the rubber pipe and putting a bolt in pipe to blank it will do, we should think our selves lucky that we have a vacuem egr not them horrible electric ones that renaults use poor bugger biggest rubbish on market the dci/hdi/jtd the amount of faults ive had to fix on them i would say 1 vag engine to 10 french etc always costs a fortune, guy ran out of diesel cost him 260 for pump and 4 recon injectors. Richard gal Posted March 18, 2010 Report Posted March 18, 2010 The working egr valve stops high Nitrous oxide emissions, they are not tested for on a UK mot. Quote
