I have a 2003 Galaxy (diesel 1.9 tdi). Last winter auxillary heater stopped working totally after intermittent firing up with clouds of black smoke, have had glow plug checked and fan checked by local garage and they seemed to be fine. Any other suggestions that may stop the thing working altogether would be appreciated.

Also air con got warm this summer, pressure tested, recharged x 3 and still can't find the leak as it disappears over 3-4 weeks - any suggestions.

Yesterday the brake light dashboard light bulb indicator stayed on, indicating I had a bulb out somewhere, after investigations to my horror I found all my brake lights were not working. Fuses checked, but no problem found - any ideas?

Also glow plug light on dashboard started flashing, and a message saying "engine workshop", yet car starts and runs fine. Unfortunately now also found out this morning that the central locking no longer works, and interior lights have now also failed - any ideas or suggestions other than maybe it is time to change the car would be appreciated!

i would take a close look at the fuse board to see if theres any water ingress???

also take a look at the fuse board under the bonnet,

also check the main relays are working correctly.

aircon,

yep sounds like youve got a leak somewhere(no 5hit sherlock)do a search n here for info about air con in general, there are various elements that tend to fail, only you can decide how deep your pockets are, sometimes it can be very expensive to a/find and b/fix.

sounds like you need a new brake switch(info in faqs in tech section on how to replace)also i found the cheapest place to buy was vw,approx 8 quid, fords wanted nearly 20 quid.

i think the glow plug light is connected to the brake switch,so you hopefully sort 2 probs out in 1.

booster heater, youve said its been checked?but have the fault codes been cleared, iirc if not then it wont fire up,there is a small thread on here about booster heaters,if you go ahead and read it ALLOW A FEW HOURS.war and peace isnt as long.

hth a bit.

hi gregers, well its a year on and i must appolagise for not saying thankyou to you sooner to your reply last year.the brake switch was at fault and the aircon was the condencer leaking, the only problem i still have is the aux heater and not wanting another winter of cold journeys am investigating how to get it running again.the heater was looked at by my mechanic last year taking it apart and the fan was tested and the glow plug tested and also measured against a new one but wasnt much difference between them so didnt change.after clearing faults it seems tto start up but dosnt go for long and when it shuts off i dont hear the jet noise as i did when i first got the car and all was working as it should. i have a suspition that it may be the motor not kicking in and its overheating and tripping out or maybe the run-on pump i have now read a little about.any ideas that i could try myself or get my mechanic to look at.kev

Hi there

A good idea to check and see what faults have been logged since last used, if it has overheated and/or flame out 5 times in succession the heater will lock out and will not start till codes cleared, do check run on pump located on bulkhead behind fuel filter, just switch ignition on without starting engine, you should hear pump humming you should also feel vibration if working, if this pump is not working you will also notice the rear compartment heater will blow cool/cold air even when on the hot setting as the engine water pump is not sufficient to pump through booster and rear compartment heater.

I think that you might mislead the OP Chris - When my run on pump was not working it didn't affect either the booster heater or the rear heater - However as I have dual aircon that may be why. I have changed three glow plugs so far - one on the MK1 and 2 on the MK2 - and on the latter I did not clear any faults with VAG com - the heater just fired up on it's own and has worked ever since. I would get the OP to check the connections to the dosing poump etc.
