hi all

i have a 52 plate 1.9tdi galaxy which has a problem with the cooling system i beleive. as like many other reports mine seems to have a number of symptoms:

temp goes from 90 - red, temp warning light comes on.

open expansion bottle to find the water kettling away.

all the water seems to be sucked down to the rear before opening the cap.

some times just the temp warning light will come on whilst the gauge reads 90.

just found out ( could be coincidence ) but doing over 60mph and also going uphill sends the temp gauge up.

smoke coming from oil cap ( not excessive just pressume it overheating it )

i have had a new water pump put on to no avail.

i have a new cap and stat on order to try next.

the aa have been out and done a gas test, pressure test and say the head and cooling system are holding fine. no obvious signs of any water leaks.

does anyone have a more definitive answer to this problem as i have also read of guys and gals having the heaed done and still getting the same problem after >

I have been told that the auxilaray heating pipes to the rear heater corrode and rot. this causes a minor leak that grows.

hi just had the same problem after a bottom hose split changed water pump to no avail.ended up to be a air block in the bottom of the rad .just drop your bottom hose and when the engine is cold fill up slowly with coolant with the engine running and pressing on all hoses to disperce the air .hope this helps tim :D

Have you ever topped up the coolant with non original antifreeze? Using incompatible antifreeze causes a thick gel to form in the engine block and radiator.

Are you losing water and having to top up?

Has the car been remapped or chipped?

at the min it is running mainly on water as i couldnt afford to keep paying out for antifreeze at the rate it kept losing it!

the water loss occurs as far as i can see when the bottle boils and then blows out of the expansion bottle. i cant say i have seen any water under the car once parked. lost almost all the water through kettling once.

the antifreeze is the official ford stuff which i got from the dealers. they told me not to use others or to mix it.

it has not been modded or chipped afaik

In that case, changing water pump, thermostat and cap should fix it.

i will wait till i get home weekend and will fit the new stat and refill how spacecowboy says droppring the hose off the bottom of the rad. fingers crossed.

will report back asap.

cheers for the info :D

I don't think anyone on this thread has a "Ford Engine"

hello mate i have the same problem keeps kettling and throwing all the water out, just had it pressure tested as i thought it might be the head gasket but no problem with that it held the pressure no problem,i have just taken the thermostat out and its not a ford one it vw audi so i have put it back together without a thermostat and see how it goes will get back and let you know.

Not sure what you are on about. Taking the Pi%% I would guess. My galaxy has a VW engine anyway. My V6 had a JAG engine

just to note: changed the cap alone during the week but problem still exists.bleeding and refiliing in a mo. will run around and get back to forum soon as.

i think i have found the problem thermostat, took the old one out and at the moment running the car wihout one 2 days now and aint lost a drop of water yet,so down to frauds for a new one monday morning.

Actually the mondeo /Jag Duratec v6 engine was designed by porsche  ford bought it and fixed....... evolving to less power dodgy impaler pump's and lots of cheap parts faults .Strangely the newer faster mondeo's are more the original design :)

:) Change the water pump, it sounds as if the impeller is slipping on the shaft and cant pump the flow at high speed against the thermostat restriction. Edited by seatkid

but it has had a new impeller and stat a year ago thats what i dont understand i have a bill here from the previous owner and its sais its had the upgrade impeller which is the new metal 1 unless the garage are full of crap as i took the stat out and there is no way its only a year old

Think you've just answered your own question there. It wouldn't be the first time a garage has charged someone for work thats not been carried out, unless I know the garage/dealership personally or can verify it myself I take any previous reciepts with a pinch of salt.

Don't want to sound rude but stop hi jacking this post you have your own post going with your problems which I have just replied to, your welcome to post relevant info to help Groover but so as to not confuse please ask questions about your problem in YOUR postings

rant over (it does get confusing with 2 people posting similar faults you forget who your talking too)

Groover1973

ditto Seatkid's post re the water pump you have classic signs of poor circulation, the car copes well under normal driving but when you ask for that bit extra ( foot down uphill) it overheats. There are other things it could be ie blocked rad, collapsed hoses, EGR cooler ect BUT the most common fault is the water pump with impellor problems

Have you had it at a garage yet to do a proper cooling system pressure test which can show up faulty water pumps as well as checking for head/gasket faults, are all the hoses of equal temperature , does the radiator have an equal temp all over it

let us know the outcome of any test you have had done properly as there are a few things that can cause this type of fault from blocked radiators or hoses through to major head/gasket work which as you say gets expensive

had motor in local trusted garage and they have now found that the fan doesnt cut in anymore and the return to the expansion bottle is only on a trickle. outcome is that the rad is blocked and poss switch on fan has gone. just under

so your now up and running groover?if so good result in the end.
