Thank you all for info especially suzuki91 for photos. Long job ... spent 2 hours cleaning all the dead leaves and rubbish out! Mashed mess after parking under trees for 7 years. As it was Bank Hol, no chance of replacing pollen filter, used the thin vacuum end on all folds, seems fine.

Took off the circlips on the pins, and ended up having to drill one as per advice to get some WD40 in, then the pins were in very poor condition when I eventually got them out. Once I'd shifted the pin down a bit, got the end of a clamp under the casing and then put the other end on the top of the bolt, and turned till it came out. That one took 2 hours of coaxing, the other one half an hour, but I managed not to damage the threads. All went back together OK and working now without judder or temporarily sticking. Of course, when I moved the expansion bottle to ease the mecahnism and the bulkhead back into place, the bottle electrical connector came out, so I had to move the battery, and managed to drop a socket head under the battery shelf, so that had to come out too. There's just no room to work under there, shocking design.

Anyway, job done, we'll see how long it lasts, thanks all again, I'd be bankrupt without this forum.

Well since greasing mine last June , its ceased again ,,,, i re-greased 1 month ago and it seazed again !!

seems the twisting action pushes the grease out , and if the seal is worn , rain water just poors in and flushes the grease ou even more !!

Going to have to try and do a more better repair i think !!

Hi All

Just finished cleaning and greaseing linkage.

With help from this thread

Did have big problem getting one of the arms out, did leave it soaking over night with WD40 but it would not come out.

Bit of lateral thinking next

Used two kettles of boiling water over the area

Two taps of hammer and it pulled out by hand the rest of the way

cleaned polished regreased and done

Thank you for your help

Great thread, thanks guys.

Yesterday I heard a bang just short of home, while I was working out what it was the engine stalled, totally confused! The bang was the offside wiper ball joint coming apart and the stalling was me not dipping the clutch!

The plastic female part of the ball joint had lost the domed cap section and didn't look too happy, clipped it together again but that lasted for two wiper sweeps!

Following the instructions here I had no problem removing the link arm and (surprisingly) the wiper spindle, just fell out.

Thought I would share a photo and description of how I fixed it. I've heard about using a bolt but couldn't see how that would work.

I trimmed off the broken plastic down to the main part of the ball joint, drilled a 1/16" (1.8 mm) hole through the short cylindrical part of the metal ball joint (in a pillar drill) and assembled the joint using a thin washer and a split pin.

Quite chuffed that this worked and should be a permanent fix, ought to look at the other spindle as I didn't know this was a common problem. It's a mystery why it failed.

Cheers

Just to say, thanks for this guide.

You need patience, WD40 or similar and a bit of force.

I have managed to get the linkage out (getting the wiper arms off was bad enough - plenty of wiggling and let the lubricant set in) and will work on it later.

Both sides are stuck solid as I suspected.

Let's hope I can fix it!

If not, any suggestions on where to get new/second hand linkage? eBay seems like a good start...but anywhere else?

Thank you for this guide! I had managed to get everything apart, greased up and put back again, but when I put the wipers back on, despite marking the windscreen, they were totally out of sync. So I did the obvious and went straight to Google and this forum came up and thanks to the photo of the position of the motor link I now have working wipers. So thank you once again!

I had the issue with wiper stopping half way. This was after nut on motor came off and wipers failed to move. Linkage removed to check all above details handy whilst doing this. When the wiper failed to return to bottom i removed the nut from motor and moved the wiper blades into position then reattached the nut and wipers were then correct.

My 2000 Galaxy wipers have been struggling for a while now before packing up altogether, so I did the strip down.   I was pleasantly surprised by how easy it was to dismantle the car.  And clearing out all the leaves and pine needles felt good.

One of the spindles was very tight, needed a lump hammer and heat. The slightly less tight one was the most corroded, having lost nearly all of it's chrome plate. Everything was going well until I decided to place a mounting bolt on the battery, and then forgot about it during the ensuing slight struggle to get the mechanism back in place, forgot about it until I heard it bouncing off parts of the engine on it's way to it's new home. Tomorrows job is find the bolt or find a new one.

It'll be interesting to see how long this patch-up lasts, any sign of wiper weakness and I'll try the drill method next time to get some more grease in.

Well, I had my '99 Galaxy on the road for over 14 years, and the seized wiper assembly came quite early on.

It was stripped, shafts and bushes cleaned and all greased with black Moly, and touch wood, I never had to do it a second time.

To be fair not that bad a job as long as you take that sound proofing, shelf, cover thing off first. I'm 100% sure though that the passenger side wiper is meant for the driver side. LH drive version and they didn't re design it for UK market
