Holiday Problems 03 Plate Sharran 115 Tdi Cut Out & Died

hi last week on the way down to cornwall i went to accelarate and the sharan just cut out altogether , i was doing 80mph and the dash beeped at me and said "engine workshop" , it was at tick over and i tried to accelarate but in wasnt responding at all , when i went into the breakdown lane the revs were at 1200 rpm and i could not rev it at all

i rang my mate and he said turn it off and back on again

i did this and it was fine till not and that was 500 miles ago

what do you think this could be , its being read on weds

Just a guess but it could be a faulty accelerator switch. They are an electrical switch and are prone to wearing in one segment, the bit that's used the most. Could be the ECU got erratic signals from the switch and shut down. This could also be why you had no response from the accelator.

 

Switching off would maybe clear the ECU.

By accelerator switch, he means throttle position sensor (the thing on your accelerator pedal) - a double track device - if one track gives a dodgy reading the symptoms you describe occur. IIRC about

On searching the forum, it appears that the throttle position sensor only comes complete with pedal for models after 1998. around

had it read it was the throttle position sensor , and vw have got one for

[seatkid]

Exactly what I would do.
