jamesey Posted March 4, 2009 Report Posted March 4, 2009 ive noticed over a few monthe when i start the 1997 alhambra ahu tdi , i cant turn the steering wheel it seems to lock , it then gets over that and is normal , the other day i was doing the front pads and i noticed the pas belt on the side of the engine had nearly snapped and was only held on by the core of the belt , now yesterday i was driving in the rain and came to an island i pulled onto it and tried to turn round it and the steering wheel locked up , the belt is tentioned up okcould it be a worn pulley or could it be somthing seizing up , i really need to sort this as i carry my kids in this car  Quote
Bigjeeze Posted March 4, 2009 Report Posted March 4, 2009 If the belt is so worn as to be nearly breaking then it would likely be slipping which would affect the effectiveness of the power steering - So firstly install a new belt, check the fluid level is ok and that there are no obvious leaks. Then check all the steering joints to see if they are seized or broken. Quote

If your belt had snapped or slipping I suspect you would still have steering but very heavy, but if the steeringwas too hard it is poss something like the rack Radiotwo Quote
tiny Posted March 4, 2009 Report Posted March 4, 2009 Sorry its not clear from your post, but have you replaced the worn belt? Is your lower engine cover in place? There is a known problem (read it in a service bulletin) with certain models and driving with no lower engine cover in the rain. Apparently road spray hits the pump/pulley/belt and results in loss of power steering. Sorry i cant be more specific with the information regarding exact models affected but my TIS disk seems to have got lost. Quote

Richard gal Posted March 4, 2009 Report Posted March 4, 2009 How long has the new belt been on?, it may need retensioning now its bedded in. Quote
mikej Posted March 4, 2009 Report Posted March 4, 2009 SPOOKY  had my gal for 3 years now and had never had issues with the steering untill this weekend , had the same thing happen to me approaching a roundabout then no pas would have gone over the bloody thing if the engine hadn't died at the same time . Chucking it down with rain and guess what , no engine undertray on as i had left it off due to ongoing repairs. Scared the sh1t out of me . Turned ignition off and on and the gal run like a dog ( felt like it was on 2 cylinders ) with the pas belt squeeling like hell , a few high revs and it was all working fine again , put a new belt on to on the safe side and refitted the tray , now fine ! Will not be driving without it fitted again ! Quote
gregers Posted March 4, 2009 Report Posted March 4, 2009 not having an undertray fitted has been a problem posted on here quite a few times over the years, and the consensus is make sure whoever carries out the servicing on your car is MAKE SURE THEY BLOODY PUT IT BACK. Quote
