jamesey Posted November 11, 2008 Report Posted November 11, 2008 hi ive a tdi ahu engined alhambra and somtime when i start the car it makes an almighty starter motor squeel as its dis engaging has anyone else had this , and is there a easy fix like greasing it up or cleaning it , thanks  Quote
Mirez Posted November 12, 2008 Report Posted November 12, 2008 Had it on other cars, the basics of a starter motor is that a small drive gear is pushed onto the engine and then withdrawn as the key is released / engine starts. If it fails to be withdrawn properly then it spins up with the engine which spins it beyond the speed its designed for - hence the squeel. You can take it all apart and clean out the grunge whilst lubrictating it all up however its a reasonable effort to go to and since you have to take it off the car to clean, probably easier to just replace. jamesey Posted November 12, 2008 Author Report Posted November 12, 2008 took it off no probs , quite easy really , while off i pulled the cog end out and it was a bit sticky , i cleaned it with some alloy wheel cleaner (onlything i had) then lubed the shaft up , all ok for now dont know how long for Quote
marcostig Posted November 18, 2008 Report Posted November 18, 2008 ye mines the same took off ,cleaned ,lightly greased it still does it !! not always though just put up with it now.. :D Quote
jamesey Posted November 23, 2008 Author Report Posted November 23, 2008 did mine the same last week and touch wood no problems up to now , but i thought it came off easy peasy :( Quote
f0ster Posted November 23, 2008 Report Posted November 23, 2008 all pre engauge starters have a one way clutch in them, it is located just behind the drive gear, when the engine starts the one way clutchprevents the starter from being spun up to disintegration speeds, this clutch can start to fail under load, when and if, it starts to fail you get squeeling noises Quote
mike634949 Posted January 6, 2009 Report Posted January 6, 2009 I lubed mine but the startup squeal soon returned. Eventually bought a pattern replacement from Cafco for about Quote
mikej Posted January 6, 2009 Report Posted January 6, 2009 Done this 3 times now in three years , strip , clean and back in again , will buy a new one eventually , its just the fact it lasts almost a year befor it returns ! Quote
