hi ive a tdi ahu engined alhambra and somtime when i start the car it makes an almighty starter motor squeel as its dis engaging has anyone else had this , and is there a easy fix like greasing it up or cleaning it , thanks

Had it on other cars, the basics of a starter motor is that a small drive gear is pushed onto the engine and then withdrawn as the key is released / engine starts. If it fails to be withdrawn properly then it spins up with the engine which spins it beyond the speed its designed for - hence the squeel.

You can take it all apart and clean out the grunge whilst lubrictating it all up however its a reasonable effort to go to and since you have to take it off the car to clean, probably easier to just replace.

took it off no probs , quite easy really , while off i pulled the cog end out and it was a bit sticky , i cleaned it with some alloy wheel cleaner (onlything i had) then lubed the shaft up , all ok for now dont know how long for

all pre engauge starters have a one way clutch in them, it is located just behind the drive gear, when the engine starts the one way clutch

prevents the starter from being spun up to disintegration speeds, this clutch can start to fail under load, when and if, it starts to fail you get squeeling noises
