I was messing about with my broadband connection as I keep getting disconnected, I unscrewed the BT master socket and plugged the router into the 'test socket' behind the front plate, my ADSL broadband speed doubled ! No more disconnections and no more slow speeds, the only problem is, this obviously makes all the other connections in the house unuseable. I will leave it plugged in there now, but does anyone know how much BT will charge to sort out the other sockets ?

Hi Jkspoff

It is well know that these cause problems, A very good friend had the same problem.

I assume you have plugged the filter in there? , if so just plug the face plate back into the

filter.

You ask how much BT will charge ? I recon a lot, but if the other bit does not work, its easy

to sort out your self, first unplug all the phones, and check the BB, and if it is clear with no phones

plugged in then start to plug each phone in one by one, till you find the problem phone (or filter).

Thanks for the advice, I've tried the step by step method of each plugged in device, I think the problem must be with the wiring, aha, I have plugged the filter faceplate back into the filter whilst keeping the ADSL plugged into the test socket, good thinking, they all now work ! Edited by jkspoff

JK, have you got SKY? if so make sure the telephone connection from it is filtered  (common problem), failing that everything from the master socket (wiring/slave sockets) needs to be good quality, get rid of any slaves that have screw type connections for the phone cable, I think the cable is the root of most problems including being routed near EMF heavy devices, readily cured by using Cat5e instead (it's shielded & much better quality).

Thanks for the advice, I've invested in one of these ADSL/phone faceplates shown above, so will install that and keep my ADSL line completely seperate from my voice line, hopefully it will then keep the high speed reliable connection better then.

Wow, easy to install the faceplate, took 5 minutes, my connection is now 100% stable and speeds have significantly increased, well worth the

did the same to mine when I installed it a couple of years ago - the other thing that help was updating my smc barricade router/adsl modem to a netgear one when the barricade gave up the ghost (it was 7 years old) - line now syncs at 8Meg instead of 6Meg

The wiring behind my NTE-5/new ADSL faceplate master socket still remains a mystery to me, I have re-wired it the same way as it was when I removed it, so that the extensions running off it still work correctly, does anyone have a clue what is going on with the wiring in this picture, as its baffled me, and I've searched all over the internet but can't find out why some of the terminals have 2 wires attached and why the colour coding is different ?? Although everything works perfectly, it would be nice to know why !

Ignore the above post, I have now sussed it out ! They are extensions to other sockets, the ring wire (not normally needed and recommended to be disconnected for ADSL users) is in connector '3', however it can be left in if the socket has an ADSL faceplate filter fitted which mine now has. All becoming as clear as mud to me !
