Hi all, i have a problem with what i think is called the auxiliary heater, it is located under the car near to the rear end, and is shaped like a miniture exhaust, the problem occurs on warm up, when lots of white smoke or steam or both pours from this little exhaust and on inspection is quite wet with diesel. The Galaxy 1.9 tdi has never done this before, but when it does happen it can be quite worrying, any help please

think you need a new glow plug in there,do a search on aux heaters, get a drink sit down and spend about 3 weeks reading up on it  theres a lot of posts on the subject.

just realized you have posted this in the mk 3 section.

I assume this is a mk 1 or mk2 not a mk3 (posted in mk3 area) .... does it get hot (little exhaust) if not then may well be glowplug in aux heater. have a look at the faq(click on link in my sig) link 1 - get a cuppa before reading!

blimey gregers your fingers must be getting quicker - either that or the kid you get to read the posts is getting better  by a minute

Thanks for these replies, am not sure which mk but is now about 5-6 years old, no fancy extras, 1.9 tdi, greater of the 2 hp's, 115 i think, manual gear box. I will do some inquiring about changing the glowplug and try to change it myself  You were correct, there were quite a few posts on this, i will try to digest as much as possible first. I did read in one of the posts that the unit can be dissabled? at least until it's repaired.

Thanks for the excellent advice, i have removed the fuse and smoke is no longer present, i will hopefully start work on the heater at the weekend. Having looked at the other link from GMSGuy concerning this unit, i can't view the pictures? and have just two questions, on removal of the fuel pipe, will it leak, and will i cause damage running the car without the heater running?

Kind regards and thanks, Mark.

You won't damage the car. It just won't heat the water as it's meant to and like me, you are in for a cold winter; at least for the first 10 miles every day.

This site is a mine of useful information

Before I rush to order a new glowplug could anyone comment on the recent symptoms of my 05 Gal TDi (130)

An occasional distinct aroma of eau de diesel in the car - this is when i first get in, before the keys are even in the ignition

An occasional smell of exhaust fumes inside the car - this comes a while after the journey started.

Both of these are recent issues. Since it got cold...

I do get the whining noise at the end of short journeys ...

Any ideas on how long replacing the glowplug should take a competent mechanic in a properly equipped workshop?

Ok, thanks for advice again, i feel better knowing the car will not be damaged with the aux heater inoperative. All nuts and bolts have now been sprayed with wd40, will try to remove old plug this weekend. Am still to obtain a replacement plug but could wait! It would be nice to buy the Glowplug off the shelf locally

I have the same problem with smoke comming out of the Aug Heater. Took my Galaxy to dealers but they can not book me in for another 3 weeks (Too busy). I have read the topics but is there simple instruction on how to replace the glow plug or how to disconnect the Aux heater for 3 weeks? Any help will be appriciated as I am being flashed and horned when I am driving.

Shanda - as Stevie M says higher up this thread, pull out fuse 12 in the fuse box next to the steering column. That should stop the smoke. Edited by edatelder

Also worth noting, in my hanbook it described my no 12 fuse as a blue 25amp and for something other than the heater? It is no 12 for sure, white and 30amp, remove this.

Hi, can someone please advise if the Aux heater can be disabled? Ford Dealer can not check my Galaxy for another 3 weeks. Until then I am getting a lot lot of white smoke off the Aux heater. I read somewhere fuse 12? if removed can stop the smoke. Is that correct? If so where can I find this fuse. Any help will help as I have to take kids to school and don't want police stoping me. Thanks

Hi,

1st post so please be Gentle.

Sorry if I am opening old wounds, or going over already covered topics, but...... My 04 1.9TDI Ghia, smokes more than I do.

We got her in Sept 07 by Nov 07 we had had the Glow Plug changed to no avail, they then changed the Aux heater (under warantee) this cured the smoke prob. Last month it all started again, took her back to the dealership they changed the Exhaust on the Heater, this didn't work, so it went back in and they changed the Glow Plug (all chargeable parts) this didnt work, so they got authority to change the heater, this done (in record time i might add) we got her back. You probably know whats coming, next morning Billowing smoke again, every time I get out of the car I can smell Deisel, so back she went AGAIN !!!! Dispite the fact that she was billowing smoke when we pulled up in the dealership, they phoned us and said they could find nothing wrong  . I am at the end of my rope about now, they have had the car 5 days from the last 10 and still its smoking, ANYONE HELP ?????
