davewill Posted October 10, 2008 Report Posted October 10, 2008 Chrissy Is it Manual or Auto? Mines an Auto (1.9 Tdi Zetec) and its gonna be a lot more expensive to tax than the manual version, even though i can get 5 to 6 mpg more Politicians - Hate em :o Quote
tiny Posted October 11, 2008 Report Posted October 11, 2008 Mines an Auto (1.9 Tdi Zetec) and its gonna be a lot more expensive to tax than the manual version, even though i can get 5 to 6 mpg more :angry:A properly driven manual is more efficient than an auto, gears can be changed when the driver wants not when the ECU decides, this has been thrashed out before and im ready for the flaming from the auto camp but even the manufacturers figures show that manuals are the more fuel efficient. In the case of a 115 TDi MkII the combined cycle figures show a 6mpg saving for the manual over the auto and 33g/km less CO2. Quote

Tiny I appreciate your comments and the "official" figures on Manual v Auto. But, from my point view having driven both modes over the last 3 years, the Auto certainly gives more mpg. Now this may be because on my current Auto version is cruise control, that wasn't on my manual version. So, on a trip to London via M6 Toll Road, M42/ M40 etc, i use cruise control as much as possible and achieve around 40 - 41mpg most timkes on this journey. With the Manual and no Cruise control, i could only manage 36-37mpg on the same journey. I also feel that when driving the auto you don't tend to boot down the accelerator butv take things a bit easier. I do appreciate that the Manual has a 6 gear box, and the auto is a 5 gear box, so revs at 70mph will be higher in the auto. Of the two versions give me the auto every time ;) Quote
tiny Posted October 13, 2008 Report Posted October 13, 2008 (edited) Now this may be because on my current Auto version is cruise control, that wasn't on my manual version. I also feel that when driving the auto you don't tend to boot down the accelerator butv take things a bit easier. So what your saying is that when you quoted 5-6mpg more then it was nothing to do with the auto transmission but in fact the cruise control and your now more relaxed driving manner. Surely then the implication is that cars with cruise control should qualify for a lower tax band? :o Note that I said properly driven manual, for comparisons sake you must take out the individuals driving style, I doubt that you or I could get the same MPG constantly in identical vehicles. Just as important is the driving enviroment, I dont doubt that on a 100 mile motorway trip an auto could provide higher mpg than an equivalent manual if the gear and diff ratios dictated but the fact is that these figures show the best available from each vehicle when driven correctly and the auto in those condtions provides lower MPG and higher CO2 emmisions. I strongly suspect the reason auto Galaxy's have a higher tax band is actually to cover the recycling costs of all those knackered auto boxes! ;) ;) :o :22: :22: Edited October 13, 2008 by tiny Quote

El Dingo Posted October 19, 2008 Report Posted October 19, 2008 Many labour MP's object to the RFL banded increases, in particular those being introduced retrospectively. If you don't like it, write to your MP! IMHO the new tax bands will do nothing for the environment - this won't even get many of the older and higher emissions cars off the road - indeed, some cars have lost so much value that it will be cheaper to just keep them going for as long as possible and pay the higher tax. faz Posted October 19, 2008 Report Posted October 19, 2008 Has any one noticed if the price of a pre March 2001 car is worth more than post March 2001 car, because taking a 2.8 Galaxy for example, in 18 months time, the post March one will be paying Quote

fedupwithjunk Posted November 8, 2008 Report Posted November 8, 2008 I can confirm that my auto averages 43-44 mpg throughout the year and can easily do over 50mpg on a good day. I think it does better than the manuall mainly because of driving style of auto drivers Quote
