Guys,

Some of you may be aware that I am having problems with my galaxy.

Its a late Mk1, 1.9 TDI, 110 BHP, probably one of the last made.

It just turns and turns, without even looking interested in starting.

It looks like either the crank sensor, which Ive got no hope of doing myself,(God knows why they hide it where you go just about see it, let aone change it) or this relay 30.

Now, its just possible that i could do the relay myself (and its the cheaper part)..however, I cant find the relay board....not a good start.

I know there is a great guide in the FAQ's, but it looks like its a Mk 2 model.

Ive read things like fuse boards that bend down, removal of dash boards, 3 level or relays and even not having a relay 30.

Can anyone let me know where I should start looking for the relay board so I can check this relay out?

I have to say, that what I can see looks very much like the fuse panel shown in the FAQ's guide.

Any help is much appreciated.

There is no relay 30 on a Tdi. Relay 30 is the fuel pump relay on a petrol engined model. The Tdi has a mechanical fuel pump.

You havent changed the batteries in the key fob have you? You may have lost the PATS chip in the key if you have.

Thanks for the reply.

Just as well i didnt pull the car apart trying to find it.

Unfortunately, its nothing simple like changing key fob batteries, as the car did not come with a remote key.

looks like it may be the crank sensor then...at least I hope so..(cheaper than fuel pump/ cam belt) ..even though I dont have a spare and I dont think I can change it myself....

....the non starting saga continues.....

Sometimes I really hate my galaxy :)

steve,

the crank sensor isn't all that hard to replace... don't take it to a garage... have a go mate... It should only take 30min max...sent you a personal msg earlier explaining how I did mine.

Good luck

Cheers mark..

Looks like the sensor goes into the engine behind where the oil filter is.

I can just about make out the allen key.

The sensor will be here tomorrow and I will have a go as soon as I can.

I will let you know how I get on.

Thanaks for your help.

;) GUESS WHAT?

I looked up crankshaft/camshaft position sensors on the TIS and......

IT WOULD APPEAR THERE IS NO CRANKSHAFT OR CAMSHAFT POSITION SENSOR ON THE TDi (90/110bhp)!!

They are only fitted on a PD engine and all those crap  petrol engines....

Edit......but there is an ENGINE SPEED SENSOR........located just to the right of the oil filter.......Panic over......!

OH.....

Well Ive ordered something!!

The guy put my Reg into a computer and told me I had an AFN engine and ordered me a crank / cam sensor.

Is this speed sensor the same thing???

At least I did manage to sus out it wnet behind the oil filter....now all Ive got to do is reach the blummin thing.

Basically Yes

Its a tight squeeze between that oil filter and intercooler air pipe.

Me thinks you may have to detach the intercooler pipe and move it out of the way. Or remove the oil filter. Or both.

Thanks, I was thinking the same thing.

Ive just got hold of a vac com from Ebay....and it says that my car in not compatible!!!

Surely my 1999, 1.9TDI should be OK??

The plug fits in fine, and then it searches and nothing is reported.

This thing should work with an alhambra or sharan.....any idea what I am doing wrong??

I seem to remember reading something somewhere about the com port must be correctly configured (possibly the virtual com port if its a USB cable, they can be set to com1,com2.....etc).

Please treat this with the contempt which it probably deserves but I had the same problem about 2 years ago and it turned out to be low fuel in spit of ther being some 10 - 15 litres in the tank. Somehow I had left it ticking oevr on my drive (about 1 in 4 slope) for a few minutes then switched off. Half an hour later it wouldn't start. I put it on to level ground and put another 5 L in and di everything you're doing for a couple of days. Eventually I got mad and got it to turn over until the battery went flat or it started. It took several minutes and eventually, after a lot of bubbles in the fuel line, it fired up. It has never repeated the problem but I never leave it ticking over on the drive now.

As I said, call me whatever you like, I'm beyond being insulted these days. ;)

Sorry, just read the other topic and got a fuller picture.

Just ignore me.
