big_kev Posted June 29, 2008 Report Posted June 29, 2008 can i put oil for a petrol engine, into the diesel gal. Yes if someone shows you how... Anyhow A new rack costs this much A nearly new one cost this much. Quote
Bigjeeze Posted June 29, 2008 Report Posted June 29, 2008 Have to ask the obvious question - Are you absolutely sure you need a new rack and pump ? The likelyhood of both going at the same time is pretty remote. Anyway I always thought the pics of your rack were fine!!! Quote
jkspoff Posted June 29, 2008 Report Posted June 29, 2008 Definately worth putting any oil in rather than nothing ! Quote
mk2vr6 Posted June 29, 2008 Report Posted June 29, 2008 (edited) Definately worth putting any oil in rather than nothing ! very true! and depending on the brand you could increase the value of the vehicle as well! http://www.freedomtrailriders.org/forums/style_emoticons/default/rofl3.gif Edited June 29, 2008 by mk2vr6 Quote

stevie m Posted June 29, 2008 Report Posted June 29, 2008 (edited) Hi maz. Give gsf a try if you want a new one. I looked on their site and they had one for a sharan one for Edited June 29, 2008 by stevie m Quote
Neils TDi again Posted July 1, 2008 Report Posted July 1, 2008 MAz Before you go spending large amounts on dosh on a rack and pump try putting a new power steering belt on the Gal from my own MK1 as you remember it also had the same problem and that was down to the belt being worn rather than loose, it allowed the belt face to slip in the pulley and then when the demand for pressure in the pump was increased everything juddered. Good luck with the oil but I would still be looking for a change rather than just the top up as when it gets that low its likely to have over heated the existing oil. Quote
Mirez Posted July 1, 2008 Report Posted July 1, 2008 Deffo check the belt, also check the tie rod ends for play and the wishbone bushes - it'll all add up to very sloppy steering if anththings worn. Pump and Rack are last to suspect as they arn't typically considered durable items. Quote
turk90210 Posted July 1, 2008 Report Posted July 1, 2008 Highly unlikly you need a new rack or pump as neil says, these items usually need replacing when leaking or worn (ie bearings collapse or fail mot for excess play). if non of them are leaking get the belt taken off and try to turn the pump by hand and see if there are any really tight points (its rarer than hens teeth but pumps occasionally seem to sieze)I would look at what drives the pump and anything assosiated with it as it sounds asif the belt is not turning the pump properly, ie worn belt, tensioner, has the alternator got one of the clutch pullys and is it siezed (not sure if it was on this site but recall reading that this has been known to cause similar problems and people have had racks ,pumps, tensioners replaced at great expense by garages but not cured the fault)Also check all the other pullys for free movement that the belt goes around incase they are stiffening up regards turk Quote
