exactly my point on another thread

I did wonder if it would be useful to know whether a previous speed setting had been saved but without but its very limited

All the other lamps tell you when something is in use, Indicators, Main Beam, Fog Lights etc etc.

Plus of course this is the way of course this is the way it works in other vehicles, only when active !

I came accross this snippet of info.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Technical solution

Problem description

Cruise control warning lamp doesn't work

Cause

The warning lamp for the cruise control is activated by the engine control unit through the CAN bus. Only the latest engine control units supply the necessary CAN bus signal. These are mainly control units, which fulfil the exhaust gas standard EURO 4. All other engine control units do not supply the CAN bus signal "Cruise control switched on". Therefore the warning lamp is not activated. Precise information about the CAN suitability of all control units is not possible because of the great number of variants.

Production solution

The conversion of all engine control units is planned in the medium-term.

Service solution

The cruise control warning lamp is fitted in all combination units. But it only works, if the engine control unit supplies the necessary CAN bus signal. If the warning lamp doesn't work, this doesn't indicate a fault of the system, but it means that the CAN bus signal is missing. The CAN bus signal cannot be measured with workshop equipment.

Replacing the combination unit or the engine control unit doesn't cure the problem. The owner's manual will be changed for model year 2001.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This may explain why the early mark 2's don't have the light working even though it is physically there.

However it still does not explain why it is working "incorrectly".....or indeed why my typing is all over the place?

you havent yet proved the correct operation of the light! so how can you say it's working incorrectly?

Hence the use of quotation marks.

I think you will agree that it does not appear to work the way one would expect it too.

Also all other non vw-based vehicles, (that I am aware of) work with the light showing only when active.

Please let me know if I am wrong on this.

Can the "dark side" throw any more light on this....

Still no one with a cc that works when active !

Mind you there have not been many replies....possibly they do not realise they have to answer all 3 sections.

for some apparent reason it wont let me vote????

but mine light comes on when its is turned on.

Won't let me vote either. B) And I did tick 'none of the above' for the two engine/model options that didn't apply.

For what it's worth, a bit of c & P and here's my 'vote'. Hope it helps.

Mk2 VW engined (V6 or TDI) with CC and a light which comes on when CC switch is set to ON

Edit; Would you Adam 'n Eve it? Just tried again and it accepted my vote ! B)

A development on this, I've just swapped my 01 cluster with no cruise light for an 04 cluster - result, cruise light now comes on when the stalk is in the "On" position.

More interestingly is that the cluster was from an auto, this means that until recoded the speedo is reading about 20mph out. Activating cruise gives some weird pulsed acceleration and then it slows the car down until it deactivates. It would therefore seem that the CC light is entirely controlled by the cluster, more so that the cluster is sending some signals back to the PCM that directly influence the way cruise works....

I do, and the light comes on only when the CC is activate. However the new golf is all can-bus and I dont have the correct interface cable to communicate with it :D

As a footnote it should be noted that on the Mk3, or so I am informed, that the cruise control light is only illuminated when active.....which seems to be the correct setting.

Still think this is something that can be changed on the Mk2 gals.

p.s. if ressurecting this annoys anyone.....tough !......you know who you are.... :P
