I've bought a 1998 Ford Galaxy 2.3i Ghia X, and I was wondering if anyone could answer me a couple of questions.

a ) Does the car feature remote central locking? I have no remote key for it (just a red key, and a black key). If it does feature it, how much can I expect to pay to get a remote key that works with the car?

b ) Does the car have an alarm? I don't think it has, but I can't say I'm sure about it? Any tell-tale signs to look out for? And if it doesn't, how much might I expect to pay to get one fitted (yes, I am a bit of a car noob!)

Thanks in advance :D

Probably won't have remote central locking if you have a Red Key ( shoot me down in flames guys if i'm wrong ).

If it has an alarm i would expect you to have an LED inside the drivers door next to the window which flashes when the car is locked ?

Hmmm, I do have a red LED that flashes on the drivers door when I lock the door... interesting.

If you have a red flashing ledthe definatly have an alarm. it auto arms when you lock the door. to just lock without setting alarm turn o lock twice within 10 seconds.

Red LED is for deadlock/immobiliser. If you only have red key and black torch key then you don't have remote central locking, BTW leave the red key at home as its used to program additional keys to immobiliser.

IIRC if you have alarm look for 'mesh' type patterm on the plastic trim on 'A' pillars.

If you want RCL and alrm theres some info opn a post I did a while back, search my username and remote locking.

Ok, having digested the replies here, and having done some further research on this form I can conclude:

a) I have the Infrared sensors, which suggests I have infrared remote unlocking.

;) I also have the mesh pattern on the b pillar (behind each front seat) which suggests I have the factory fitted volumetric alarm system.

Reasonable conclusions?

The car is alarmed. Couldn't set it off from inside (might have rushed), but I could set it off by closing the door so it catches but isn't closed, setting the deadlock then trying to open the door.

Now, what do I do to get hold of some infrared remote key fobs?

See if you can borrow a remote from someone a gal and try to program your car to the key.

It will not do their key any harm at all and will still work in their vehicle afterwards.

See if you can put your car into remote programming mode...check the faq.

You can do this with any of your keys it doesn't have to be a remote one.

If the led flashes then it should accept a remote key.
