The only problem with it is the interior colour if you have loads of little ones it will get messy quickly and a bu**er to clean speaking from personal experience LOL

Yep, thats one of the things thats putting me off, however I am going to go take a look.

Just seen this one too, mkIII and fairly cheap for the year, massive saving on new, but it is petrol. http://www.thecarpeople.co.uk/kcom/ucl/res...;dataptr=000653

Hi JKS. I note that you've posted two totally different cars, with entirely different budgets...

Have you decided on your budget, and what you want from a car? Low fuel consumption? High mileage or no mileage? Keep forever or trade in in two years?

The Mk2 and Mk3 are really very different cars. Why not have a test drive in both and see what you like?

I totally agree. These 2 cars will be so different on fuel, handling, performance, looks & quality of build and not to mention price got to be worth a test drive in both.

Look at the reviews of them all on the net. They will give you a good guide. Mercs are not always the best. Mum thought of one then someone said they weren't quality and bits broke on them. I looked at the review on the net and in fact it was a known problem. The merc gives you the feeling that your driving a van. The galaxy i owned gave me feeling i was driving a car and thats why i liked it so much. (mkII)

Yep, just read the Parkers guide review, they don't get a very good right up, probably more the case of passenger comfort than drivers enjoyment. Just found a 2007 Galaxy mkIII Zetec with 18k miles for Edited by jkspoff

I wouldn't buy a Mk3 as it has no spare wheel/tyre. Ever had a flat with 7 people on board? It's no fun waiting for a breakdown service, I'm assured. Someone at work with 2 young kids had a similar thing happen a few months back - just popped out whilst Sunday lunch was cooking....... got back 5 hours later to charred roast and had to phone work on Monday to take the day off to get a new tyre sorted.

Sorry, but for me a family car just has to have a spare

There is an option for an after market space-saver spare wheel strapped to the inside of the boot lid, not sure how it works, but Ford dealer told me about it so it must be true !

Has anyone on the forum ever had any experience at car auctions, afterall thats where most of our second hand Galaxys etc originate from. I am off tomorrow (bank holiday Monday) and was wondering what the process was, apart from sticking your hand up ! or do you get a number ?? Any advice would be greatfully appreciated.

Will avoid picking my nose ! Off to see what type of price a Ford Galaxy Ghia 2004 54 plate 130bhp in silver goes for with FSH and 58k on the clock, and if its the right price I'll be sticking my hand up. Afterall all the trade do is stick a couple of grand on the auction purchase price. The cars are guaranteed if less than 5 years old not to have mechanical problems, but I'll be sticking a third party warranty on it anyway if I get it.

This reply might be a bit late, but here goes:

1. All the cars are kept in a pound before the auction, so arrive early and look around.

2. Use your eyes - see who is who. It's not just the auctioneer running the show.

3. Know the enemy - dealers, etc. Work out who they are and see what they are bidding for. Then you'll know who is the MPV specialist...

4. Don't sit in the stalls opposite the auctioneer (where they exist) - it marks you out as a rookie from the start.

5. The cars are started up before being driven through, so when you see something that takes your eye be there, look and listen when the engine is started. You can talk to the driver (although some don't talk) and this might be useful if you think about it...

6. Don't buy at the first visit.

7. Set a limit and don't exceed it.

8. On a later visit, when you see something you like and want to bid, watch out! There are many tricks for upping the bids, including the auctioneers taking bids from someone who just happens to be conveniently out of your line of sight, stooges, dogs, indeed even things that don't move. If you stand directly below the auctioneer, you'll be able to indentify where those bids are coming from.

9. Try not to get into a bidding war - bid sparingly. Use a single obvious signal, and keep using the same signal. He can see you, even if you think he can't (or he deliberately delays), so don't panic.

10. Breathe!

Just some ideas... Have fun.
