lydanial Posted March 19, 2008 Report Posted March 19, 2008 (edited) the other day i had the oil light come on telling me the oil was low so i topped up ASAP. since then i was getting a light knocking noise from the engine, this has got progressively louder until tonight when it was pretty damn loud. i got out the car and got my wife to gently rev it and i could hardly hear the noise but when sat in the drivers seat its there, and gets faster or slower according to engine revs. when i topped p the oil i did slightly overfil it but being at a garage had no way to drain anything off. so an suggestions would be useful. it started off sounding like tappets but has got a lot louder. edit, i am not sure if its doing it at speed as you cant hear it but its doing it at lower speeds through the gears, and if the car is stationary its doing it and when you rev it. Smilge Posted March 20, 2008 Report Posted March 20, 2008 Not wishing to alarm you but this sounds a bit ominous ....... How much and how often are you having to top up the oil? With it "knocking" and not "rattling" this sounds like big end bearings or piston bore wear. Get someone to follow you and watch the exhaust to see if it is burning engine oil which is usually a blue colour and smells awful ..... a bit difficult bearing in mind the diesel engine smokes a bit anyway.
