mumof4 Posted March 14, 2008 Report Posted March 14, 2008 So there i was, thinking id just give the car a check over whilst parked on the field today ( where i fly) , thought id check the tyres seeing as i havent checked them in about 11k miles, which is how much ive travelled since i bought the blooming thing. yup, rears look pretty damn good, loads of tread on them, no uneven wear and impressed with them. Then i check the fronts, first glance they look good, tread on them by the looks of it, but then i get down and run my hands round the front right, least i tried to, very uneven wear, bald as coot on the inside to the point the metal is sticking out all around the inside on the bit between the tread ( what tread?) and the top of the side wall.Bollo**s!, practically shredded my hands when i checked.so i go round to check front left, again, tread on the outside, smooth as a babys bum on the inside. In fact, both front tyres are highly illegal, the tread is below legal limit and the front right is dangerous. when i had the gal, i checked the tyres each week, with the veccy, i havent checked them once since i bought the car. So, today i have learnt a hard expensive lesson. Tomorrow, two front tyres required ASAP., tracking i think checked also when you check your tyres, run your hands around them, dont just take a quick look as gospel. Quote
searcher Posted March 14, 2008 Report Posted March 14, 2008 Well im shocked young lady. When i had the Gal all four were getting low and i got fed up with checking the bloody things every few days so went and had four fitted just for piece of mind. Quote
mumof4 Posted March 14, 2008 Author Report Posted March 14, 2008 Not as shocked as i was.The tyres have been changed, a friend called up the local garage and told me to have the car there, picked the car up just after 5.One tyre worn to the core, guy said it wouldnt of lasted much longer the way it was and then when it would of gone, it would of just disintergrated.I feel angry with myself that i put my kids in danger, just by not doing a simple check!. Why i havent treated this car like i did the Gal, i dont know.Im just thankful the tyre didnt go whilst i was driving the kids around. Quote
searcher Posted March 14, 2008 Report Posted March 14, 2008 The difference is you had a love affair with the Gal as the Veccy is just a means of getting from A to B Quote

gregers Posted March 14, 2008 Report Posted March 14, 2008 yes maz think this is a lesson learned, but count your blessings that you didnt get pulled over by the boys(gals)in blue,me thinks that wouldve cost your pocket very dear and probably some serious points on your licence,DO NOT MAKE THIS MISTAKE AGAIN,i know your going to come back at me with, you cant put a price on your kids, but it DIDNT GO BANG you got away with it,theres always ifs and whys,if my uncle had been born a woman he wouldve been my aunty :16: ,you also couldve put other road users in serious danger, just be more vigilent in future :angry2: Quote
mumof4 Posted March 14, 2008 Author Report Posted March 14, 2008 believe me gregers, i know.its lucky i did check when i did.I would never of been able to forgive myself if it had of gone bang .. To be honest, i feel bloody awful over it all.I know its all sorted now and no harm done, but the what ifs..... and i cant believe ive been so bloody stupid. Quote

tiny Posted March 15, 2008 Report Posted March 15, 2008 For what its worth, an illegal tyre carries a 3 point endorsement, as you had 2 bald ones that would be six points and IIRC you havent been passed your test 2 years yet, that would mean a ban (hitting six points before 24 months as a full license holder) and probable retest! (thats based on the reasoning that im sure you were a provisional driver when i joined in april 2006) All the more reason to be carefull! How long is it (in mileage terms) since your last MOT? Quote

How long is it (in mileage terms) since your last MOT? actually, i have now held a full licence for 2 years and exactly 5 days. I passed on the 10th march 2006. In milaege terms? she was on 98 thousand when i bought her and passed her MOT the day i picked her up, she is now on 109 thousand and not due an MOT till the beginning of June i believe. i estimate, she will be on, between 111k and 112k when she is next due an MOT. I drive 220 miles a week doing school runs.Hence why i am looking for a diesel. Quote
marcr Posted March 15, 2008 Report Posted March 15, 2008 I had the same thing on my first car........a Ford Orion (f-reg 1.6 mfi - loved it!!)As i came down the hill to pick my friend up who was waiting for me i could see his jaw drop as i approached. The inside of both fronts were down to the wire! whoops. Bit of an eye-opener. The tyres were great but soft rubber and weren't lasting too long. Obviously i got them changed. I checked the suspension and stuff underneath at the front and age was taking it's toll. I had to change the brackets that held the front anti-roll bar in place coz they'd practically snapped off. Lesson learnt indeed. ha Quote

Imagine what it'd be like if you got six points, 1 year 364 days after passing your test. I'd be gutted, lol. I wasn't having a go at you though, far from it, I was just thinking about a point that hadn't been covered in previous posts (the six point 2 year thing). Congratulations on reaching the 2 year milestone unscathed BTW! What was the tracking like? Was it a simple adjustment job or is there something more sinister afoot? I had a S plate escort that i drove into the back of a van with on a dual carriageway. When I got it back from the repairers (Nationwide Crash Repair centre - Named and shamed) the car had such a pull to the left that I had sore arms after a 15 mile drive! They had sent it back with a buckled lower control arm. Thats the sort of damage that could occur from clipping a curb, or more likely a pothole with the freezing-wet-freezing-wet-freezing weather we had a few weeks ago. If a steering component is bent, the tracking may still cause a problem. Quote
mumof4 Posted March 15, 2008 Author Report Posted March 15, 2008 very true, thry didnt get like it overnight, and i know you werent having a go, i bloody deserve it though. As for reaching the 2 yr mark, feels good.Im no longer a probationer!.I was counting down the days a week before hand and being very careful driving.lol. going down this morn to get the traking done, they were shutting up shop when i went and picked her up yesterday, 65 quid for two new tyres, havent looked to see what they have put on her, but she only has 14" tyres on her anyway.
