chemical reaction/corrosion due the battery acid! remove the battery and use a wire, water and baking soda solution to the clean it all off, allow it dry, use a good anti rust solution and repaint the tray with a good coat of hamerite etc

Why did you change the battery in the first place? check out the charging system to make sure its not over-charging!!

You should wear Acid proof gloves rubber apron and goggles ! Sulphuric acid not nice to get in your eyes or on your skin ! . ( Bet you can't tell i'm involved with health & safety :P )

Hi,

I had a similar acid/leaking problem. When cleaning everything with a lot of water and soda a lot of water/soda/acid dripped down, underneath the battery platform and eventually it leaked out from the bottom of the car. I used tons of water to rince but I'm still affraid taht everything below teh battery palform will now start rusting...... any advice?

Is that a problem?
