minty Posted February 28, 2008 Report Posted February 28, 2008 Hi, I'm new here and have searched the forums but cannot find a problem quite like the one we have on our Seat Alhambra petrol ...... The speedo, rev counter, temp gauge and fuel gauge are not working although the digital mileometer is working ..... Also we have a flashing oil light but do not know whether this is connected to the dials not working or is a separate problem altogether. The fuel light lights up and goes off but the needle then moves backwards we rang our local auto electrician who thinks we need new clocks does this sound like we do to anyone else or could there be something we could try before forking out on a new instrument cluster? Any help would be much appreciated !! :16: Quote
mumof4 Posted February 28, 2008 Report Posted February 28, 2008 be aware you cant drive the car as it is. ask your auto electrician to read the codes, that will throw up any problems. In regards to the oil light, try disconnecting the battery for 15/20 mins.see if it resets. Quote
minty Posted February 28, 2008 Author Report Posted February 28, 2008 Hi Mumof4, Thanks for the reply  Will try disconnecting the battery to see if it resets the light :16: We aren't driving the car ATM because of this problem ...... I'll have to see if the auto-electrician will come out to us we have only ever taken the cars to him so hopefully he'll come and see us *fingers-crossed* Quote

Beyond Help? Posted March 1, 2008 Report Posted March 1, 2008 Only as far as I have a second hand multi-function one in my lockup you could have had FOC for all bar the postage. Or at least I did have, it looks like it has gone walkies..... Quote

If they turn up please let us know as we are having trouble sourcing any apart from special order through Seat themselves !! Quote
minty Posted April 21, 2008 Author Report Posted April 21, 2008 Hi All Quick update we have finally managed to get a new instrument cluster and have plugged it in and the speedo is out by 10 MPH the ABS and handbrake light as well as the Airbag light stay on ...... We haven't got ABS so can't understand why this light would be lit up and we are assuming the handbrake light is on because of the ABS light. Can anyone give us a clue on what to do next? Any help greatly appreciated !!! :) Thank you Quote

Therefore the fault is somewhere else. I would'nt mind trying to plug another one in to see if what they say is correct. I paid Quote

Any help greatly appreciated !!! ;) Thank you Last time I had the ABS light on (not got on mine) was when the battery was flat, the symptoms are indicative of a short somewhere in the car, first place to look is the lead to the cluster, check for fraying etc. Check with a multi meter how much current is being drawn at the battery, 20 mins after turning ign off and closing doors, in the meantime I'll have a looksie at the wiring diagrams and see if I can point you in the right direction, i'm thinking of a dodgy earth somewhere. BTW the cluster is manufactured by Mcgavigans automotive for VW/SEAT/FORD, individual parts may be ordered thru VW. Quote
MadBaz Posted April 22, 2008 Report Posted April 22, 2008 Minty, John, Defo looks like an earth issue, on the red connector behind the cluster, get some spare wire and jump the pins 1 & 3 (both brown) wires to a solid earth (outer edge on ciggy lighter will do). you should be able to get a bit of bare cable into the back of the red connector, but please if you do this do it carefully, then test. If it works you need to look at the earth connection "under dash panel drivers side" G9. Let me know how you get on. Quote
