I have just had my booster heater repaired :D and it now operates when the outside temp is 10/11 degrees.

It has crossed my mind that instead of the temp. sensor determining when the heater cuts in or not, would it be feasible to fit a switch in place of the sensor,(by the wiper mechanism) operated in the cabin? and therefore manually control the heater operating periods.

The general census may well to leave well alone, but any comments on the feasability of this would be appreciated, or perhaps someone has done it already! :D

sounds like a good idea, i was going to do it myself. it lloks like simply extending the wires to the cabin and putting a switch across where the sensor is. ours seems to run for a long time even when the temp is warm so it should also allow the heater to be shut down manually when its warm in the cabin

I've also thought of this - I've currently bridged the sensor so the booster heater always comes on if the engine temp is cool (i.e. regardless of outside ambient temp) - others have posted on here about that as well.

I've got a Mk1 with a couple of blanking panels where switches might be (just above the cig lighter) - I might put one there; but then again, I might put a mount for the SatNav there instead, where my wife can get at it........

already done mine and works a treat just unplug te sensor and take 2 wires to a switch, now i tell it when to come on and off with the eater still aving its own internal sensor i leave it on untill the warmer weather comes

i to have noticed that my heater seems to be running continually for what seems like an age, thought i read on here somewhere that it should shut down automatically when the coolant temp reaches 75-80 degrees, when my temp gauge is showing 90 my booster is still running, but i have noticed that if i do a journey switch off then restart a few minutes later it doesnt come on.is this normal?

think i might try doing what youve done zorgman.(specially if theres any idiot instructions for it).

ere you go

locate te sensor on te passenger side wiper arms just look in above battery and its there. i took off te big plastic plate only 3 bolts and much easier to work on. theres 2 wires on sensor just get a length of 2 core wire (i used speaker wire as i had some) connect onto the 2 wires any way round i solder but scotchlocks will do.

route the wire into cabin to a location you want and simply connect it to a switch, any switch will do as it carrys no amperage.

hey viola you now control the heater.

also a good idea is to make it fire up now and again in the summer, sometimes they dont like re starting a a summer holiday. ours did this but a whack with a rubber mallett got it into life . anyone know the best place to thread the wire to the cabin, ive looked but cant see no grommets Edited by motorcareman

wrong sensor. its clipped onto the wipers stabiliser bar to the left of the hinge should be a silver disk shape approx 15-20mm thick

Hey Trick, its a good idea to put your car details into your signature. If you happen to have a post 2002 galaxy, then your temp switch operating the booster heater MIGHT just be located behind the bumper by the foglamp (there are a few variants around that time). try squirting it with iced water or freezer spray if in doubt. It should also show on the temp display on the climate control panel.
