rushy Posted January 29, 2008 Report Posted January 29, 2008 I currently have a mk 1 vr6 galaxy that is starting to fall to pieces. I am looking at getting a mk2 galaxy and have seen both a v6 and 2.3, does anyone have any opinions as to which is better? bearing in mind i will be towing a caravan and occasionally a trailer with a mgzr on board. Also, both mk2's I have seen don't have a towbar, ill the towbar off my mk1 fit? When I finally take the plunge and get the new car, I will be breaking the mk1 for spares. Thanks in advance Alastair Quote
insider Posted January 30, 2008 Report Posted January 30, 2008 Probably the V6 if you're towing but have you considered a diesel? Excellent torque for towing plus better economy. Quote

rushy Posted January 30, 2008 Author Report Posted January 30, 2008 Probably the V6 if you're towing but have you considered a diesel? Excellent torque for towing plus better economy. Did think about the diesel, however my boss is on his third galaxy and he's owned a 1.9tdi, 2.3 and now a 2.8 and he tells me that he would go for the v6 everytime. He used his diesel for towing, with 6 people on board, and even the slightest wiff of an incline caused the gal to almost stop. You say it is falling to pieces how old is it and how and what is wrong with it. Ime just nosy really as I have a mk1 VR6! It's a 96 on a N. Engine wise it's fine, slight misfire when damp (coil pack on its way out) but the main issues with it are the failing electrical bits. Back in the summer (if we can call it that) during the heavy rain, water got inside the car which killed the locking ecu under the passenger seat. At the same time the water also killed my drivers leccy window and the passenger side is also tempramental. Other things include a leaky sunroof which also has ceased to work and front suspension knocking which I know nearly all of us have suffered. My main reason for not wanting to solve these issues is that car is worth very little now and it seems a bit pointless throwing money on a car that has covered over 170K now and to be honest has served me and my tribe very well these last 4 years. richyboy Posted March 29, 2008 Report Posted March 29, 2008 i have just sold my mk1 galaxy tdi with 250k miles on it,i have now got a mk2 galaxy tdi with 160k on it, and i honestly think the mk1 was a better car all round Quote
stevie m Posted March 29, 2008 Report Posted March 29, 2008 I prefer the mk2 over the mk1. I have just part ex mine due to its mileage. I enjoyed driving it but have now decided to trade down in size. Although i have to say if a mk1 is in good condition then it still looks a fine motor. Quote
Lyric_King Posted April 27, 2008 Report Posted April 27, 2008 I dont know if this will help but... My brother in law has a MK1 VR6 on a w plate (this is also falling apart) I have a 2.3 Mk2... we both think the Mk2 is a better car although I should have gone for the 2.8 engine too!!!! but I have a friend that has the diesel engine and he suggests the V6 petrol for towing as the diesel really dont like the hills with a caravan on the back (especially in cornwall!). Hope our opinions were helpful Quote
