makil6 Posted January 7, 2008 Report Posted January 7, 2008 Hi once again folks, hope you lot can be as helpful as in the past...........Went to work this morning, noticed the gal was a little low on power. Just put it down to the cold, (wishful thinking methinks!). Just drove home about an hour ago in a cloud of thick black smoke, pretty slowly i may add. The lack of power was still there. Didnt seem too sluggish, just poor acceleration(engine has been sounding a bit rough lately tho). Didnt want to give it too much in case it came to a grinding halt!!! So if anyone can give me a clue as to what may be causing this thick exhaust smoke and reduction in power i would be most grateful. And does anyone know if the MAF is knacked would that affect the exhaust? I'll give things a wee look over in the morning before i go to work, but any help appreciated.Cheers Mike 97 mk2 diesel Quote
big_kev Posted January 7, 2008 Report Posted January 7, 2008 This sounds awfully like a serious ( ie Knackered ) engine problem. I would get this checked asap. Quote
stevie m Posted January 7, 2008 Report Posted January 7, 2008 I agree with big kev. Try the maf by all means but it sound a tad more serious than that ! I hope it is the maf. I'll keep me fingers crossed for you. Quote
makil6 Posted January 8, 2008 Author Report Posted January 8, 2008 Had a quick look this morning, on revving up the smokes more bluey grey than black if that helps anymore. Not had a chance to do much more got to go to work now. ON THE BUS!! Any suggestions? thanks. Quote
mumof4 Posted January 8, 2008 Report Posted January 8, 2008 sounds like its buring oil, as IIRC, blue smoke means its burning oil. Quote
makil6 Posted January 8, 2008 Author Report Posted January 8, 2008 Had a look this afternoon, couldnt see much in the poor light but the oil level was pretty low so yep shes burning oil. Also got a bit of oily deposit at the tailpipe. Anyone any idea if turbo failure would cause these symptoms or am i looking in the wrong direction? Dont think its the maf as this wouldnt cause the excessive smoke. Think it may have to go into a garage for a diagnosis if i cant get some help. Stranded without the gal!!! Thanks again folks. Quote
Beyond Help? Posted January 9, 2008 Report Posted January 9, 2008 Yep, turbo oil seals would do that. The oily deposit suggests it is not all burning off which would also suggest it is a post combustion problem. Quote
makil6 Posted January 9, 2008 Author Report Posted January 9, 2008 Thanks, i'll start pricing a new or recon'd turbo tomorrow and let you know how i get on. Quote
