If you lift the pedal with your foot do you get a full travel with pressure or is the first few inches with no pressure.

If it is with full pressure and is always with pressure then the fault is the master cylinder if there is none or very little pressure and the pedal dosent return on its own its very likely the slave cylinder and the concentric one is very vunerable to this failure, also very vunerable to dirty fluid so regular changes would reduce the level of failure.

Good luck with the change as it means the gearbox has to be removed as the concentric cylinder sits on the input shaft to the gearbox and this means the gearbox has to be removed to replace the cylinder.

Yup, agree with both the above posts

My 2002 Gal Tdi with 80,000 miles developed exactly the same fault

Couldn't get any gears, unless i forced clutch pedal up with my left foot

Took it to the local Fraud dealers who told me the gearbox rods needed replacing :D

Did those and charged me

Andrew

It still sounds as if the master or slave cylinder are knack'd

It's either a big DIY job, or get it to a garage for them to assess and then barter the price as best you can

It could also be the fork that holds the release bearing has bent out a bit, very rare but it does happen and the symptoms are exactly as described above, no resistance on the pedal for a bit.

Clamp the clutch flexible pipe off and see what the pedal does, if it is solid it is the gearbox end of the system and and it will have to come off.

If the box does have to come off consider having the clutch, slave and clutch release bearing all changed anyway as the bulk of the cost is removing the gearbox.
