Hi all,

this is my first post. We bought a new MK3 Galaxy April 07. Brilliant up to now, it's done 6000 miles. Last two days there is a clunk you can feel through the steering wheel and hear. It has got worse quite quickly. At first I thought it was when turning the steering wheel but now I realise it happens when power is applied or I take my foot off the throttle. My guess is some sort of loose suspension link that shifts back and fore as I accelerate/decelerate. It is also pulling left, even against a camber - this may have been going on for a while but I've tried to blot it out of my head. The electronic handbrake has also locked itself on randomly 3 times over the last 6 months - thankfully it fixes itself after a while.

I'm nervous about approaching CEM Days - my local dealership in swansea. Any ideas on the faults above and/or dealers nearish to Swansea.

Ta, Huw.

Could be anything suspension related or if an engine mount - however, since it's under warranty, i would make a trip to the nearest Ford garage for any remedial work needing attention (especially the handbrake)

P.S. Keep all paperwork listing faults, trip to dealers, how long at dealers etc etc, may come in handy later.

Have you been under the car to look for yourself yet? On the mk1 and 2's a similar problem existed regarding the bolt holding the engine stabiliser bar - maybe the mk3 has the same arrangement? That issue with the EPB sounds serious, how do you get it to clear?

Hi Nick,

it just clears after a few minutes but it will not clear by simply switching off the engine and re-starting. I called the local ford dealer who said it was a common fault on S-Max but not on Galaxy. I'll take it in soon. Thanks, Huw.

Hi Huw

I have the same "steering clunk" on a 2006 2.0 Tdci. Sometimes it is there and sometimes it isn't, and there seems no consistency or corelation with anything else. It can certainly be felt through the steering and feels very mechanical ie like something heavy moving.

I haven't raised this with my dealer yet, but I would be interested to hear how you, or anyone else with the same experience, gets on.

On the subject of steering, I do find it to be quite vague around the straight ahead position (almost like there is a degree of free play) and I also notice the vibration of a rough road surface through the wheel. Any similar thoughts ?

Hi guys, any news/update on this issue? I think I have the same noise, not very loud and I can't get it to do it at will, but it seems to be related to pulling away or braking, almost as though some thing is in the door pocket rolling around...

Hi huwb, Welcome to this forum. Saif Rehman has given you good advice. It's gotta go back to the dealers. Keep everything, you may need it later. Edited by stevie m

Hi HUW

seems like the creaking noise on my 2007 galaxy 2.0tdci is very simillar to yours !!

i can feel and hear creaking/knocking from steering wheel like there is play somewhere it is mainley felt when pulling off slowly and is more noticable when car is

cold and loaded up possibly the extra weight might be contributeing to the problem.

my car has just done 6000miles and this problem seems to get more noticable everytime i drive it, i have now been to 2 dealers and both have said they

could not replicate the problem, they did tell me there were no problems like this reported !! yeh whatever.

ps my car also suffers from a noisy steering pump (worse when cold) hows yours?

regards mark.

Hi Mark. I have the same noise I think. I've tried to 'wobble' the car in a straight line to get it to do it to order, but I can't. It sounds a bit like the production plant left a socket under the dash somewhere! I'm relecutant to start taking things apart to find it. I thought maybe I'd get the wife top put her head between my legs to she if she can locate it, the noise that is! But may get arrested...Do you have IVDC/CCD (I do) could it be something to do with that??

hi nik

no i dont have ivdc/ccd so thats one less thing for you to be concerned about!! i have determined that the knocking noise felt and heard through the steering

wheel is not related to having to turn the steering, pulling of slowly even in a straight line is were most of the movement is felt. once the car is rolling the noise is

no longer as apperent, my guess would be to start with the steering rack! do you have the optional power steering drone on yours?they put it on mine whithout even

asking for it, thankyou ford !!

We'll I've still got the noise. I've had a look around inside and had the under-tray off to look around - I can see nothing obviously wrong!?

The noise appears to be linked to movement, but can't get it to do it to order. I don't have the optional PS whine (yet!). In fact I can't 'feel' the noise through the steering wheel at all - it's just a noise. Kind of sounds like: clunk/knock/thud/bump. A bit like a large relay making contact, if you know what I mean.

There is a post here that says a lack of grease in a bush in the steering column could be the cause, but the descriptions in that thread don

I think I found my problem...I put the locking wheel nut adapter in the drivers under-seat storage bin...it's been rolling back and forth...I said it sounded like a socket, but not left by the manufacturing plant! D'oh!
