MadBaz Posted January 30, 2008 Report Posted January 30, 2008 I've just replaced my fronts with firestone f590's which I believe were original fit, They are symetrical, and give decent grip and handling in all conditions, I did have pirelli citynets on the the front but only got around 15k out of them, they really gripped on dry roads but absolutely useless in the wet, and strangely fantastic in snow, also they were prone to going squishy if given some welly into a corner, I've still got some on the back as they are ok there, I don't think they like been on driven wheels. Our TDCi Connect at work currently has citynets and they behave exactly the same as they did on the Gal, they haven't been on 8 months and are due for renewal, also they don't like a max payload, it's like driving on marshmellows. I thinks Firestones may be replacing them. Quote
Mikef Posted February 3, 2008 Author Report Posted February 3, 2008 I've still got the original Dunlop 2020's on the back done 58kand ive got Dunlop Sport Sp01 on the front they are a lot quieter than the 2020'sand have more grip! Quote
sparky Paul Posted February 3, 2008 Report Posted February 3, 2008 Thought I would throw in my two peneth. I currently have michlins on mine I get about 26k from the front and have done about 52k on the back ( still originals). I was thinking of going to something else but I may stick with them now as some of the mileages reported here are extremely low. TTFN  To be honest, I think it has more to do with the type of driving you do regularly, your engine size, and your driving style. I reckon the mileage I get out of tyres on the Galaxy is pretty average reading others posts, but my last pair of front tyres were quite cheap (Fortuna F2000) and have lasted marginally longer than the Dunlops, though there's not a lot in it. dpm Posted March 10, 2008 Report Posted March 10, 2008 I am new to this forum but have owned two Galaxii over the last 6 years or so. I have until now only been able to get the Dunlops as they were the onyl readfily available reinforced tyres suitable for the car. Ireland Mileage per tyre 20k - 30 k basically drive 10 - 15K on front and can often get another 20k on rear. Must get reinforced as if using lower spec apart from MOT issues the car will "eat the tyres. D Quote
davethecabbie Posted March 11, 2008 Report Posted March 11, 2008 i have had my galaxy for 4 years and it has done 230000 miles as a taxi.i have only tried 2 makes of tyres, firestone and continentals once.i get between 23 and 25000 out of firestones on the front.they are 195 65 15 reinforced and pay Quote
Ivor_E_Tower Posted March 13, 2008 Report Posted March 13, 2008 Dave - where do you get them from? I've not managed to get any brand anywhere near that price; it's usually over Quote
Taliska Posted April 4, 2008 Report Posted April 4, 2008 Hi, Got Dunlop 2020Es too - came with them, so stuck with them. Just replaced my rear one at 76k, lost the other rear one to a puncture at 42k. Fronts have lasted 24k, 24k, 19k, and still got the 4th set at about 9k. Last Dunlop 2020E for 215-55-R-16 H was Quote
DubDriver Posted May 7, 2008 Report Posted May 7, 2008 I have had similar experiences to the last "postee" in terms of mileage out of Dunlops. One thing that nobody has mentioned so far is, "exactly how little pressure are you running your tyres at, to get 11k miles out of a set?" I would suspect, a lot less than is recommended. Every time I have been to the local tyre fitting shops they have never put enough air in and when i tell them what to put in, they look me as if I am from outer space. 3 bar is min. recommended for 16" fronts. Audiman Posted May 27, 2008 Report Posted May 27, 2008 Do any of you guys use Dunlop Tyres? On my Galaxy, I can only get around 11,000 miles out of a pair on the front. Maybe a little more...I know they are soft but that seems v low to me. I went to Dunlops from Bridgestone, as I found the Bridgestone very noisy. Whats the latest thinking on tyres...used to be Continentals that were recommended in these forums? cheers all mikefI've recently purchased my Galaxy (2004 tdi) which came with Dunlop tyres - previously I had a Audi A4 tdi which had Dunlops as well. I had changed tyres types between Pirelli, Bridgestone and Dunlops on the Audi for the last 6 years.I got around 18,000 - 20,000 miles on the Dunlops and found these to be the most hardwaring.Don't forget that front tyres take a bashing with transmitting power & power steering. scally Posted October 24, 2008 Report Posted October 24, 2008 Hi I know your posts are old but I have a 2005 galaxy and have had lots of problems with tyre wear. The car has allways drifted slightly to the left but this was blaimed on the road camber in my area (several garages have stated this) however, I have had the car 2-years and am on my 3rd set of tyres (Mitchelin 1st, Dunlop second). The dunlops were put on in january 08 and after 10k both front tyres are so worn on the inside edge, the reinforcing nylon is showing through. I am sure that this is not correct but my local ford garage has carried out a full geom check, tracking & visual check of all components but claim there is nothing wrong - obviously there is I will be insisting they look at it again as the problem has been there since i bought the car. I have also been told this type of wear is common on this car??? can anyone confirm this? I have just had the car checked after putting on some cheeper tyres (why spend a lot when they dont last long) and have been told that the bushes are slightly worn on both sides (too much play) and the n/s trackrod end has slightly more movement than the other side - I am having this checked Howevger, i wanted to know if anyone else has experienced problems like this with tyre wear and was it resolved? I have been told by a sharran owner that some parts around the drive shaft or trackrod end have a habit of going after 60-70k miles as is a non lubricating part and there is a lubricating kit one can buy for Quote
seatkid Posted October 24, 2008 Report Posted October 24, 2008 (edited) VAG cars (of which the MK1/2 galaxy is one) have a reputation to be camber sensitive. In the UK they drift to the left and on the continent they drift to the right. My Alhambra drifts to the left to the extent that I need to hold the steering wheel to keep it straight. After investigating a lot, its my conclusion that the drift is mostly due to slightly incorrect camber settings on one side in the front suspension. On the continent, my car drives straight so maybe the factory manufacturing setup is tweaked to LHD settings by default. Anyway, there is nothing you can do to change the camber settings, it is "built" in. You would have to strip the front suspension down and shim it correctly when rebuilding. I've tried playing with different tyre pressures l/r but it makes little difference. On my first alhambra the rear tyres also feathered on the inside very badly, incorrect toe in, again nothing can be done to the rear geometry - its welded for life.Of course if the toe-in at the rear was wrong on one side only, it would also make the car drift right/left. A damaged tyre or asymetrically worn tyre can have a very noticeable effect on the steering when on the front. I recommend Continental PremiumContact btw Edited October 24, 2008 by seatkid Quote

Possibly the slowest reply of all time...but I run my tyres at exactly the recommended pressures, and check them every two weeks. Pump 'em up when I go on hols fully laden, take 'em down when I get home.... The latest pair seem to be doing well at 9000 miles, so will see how they go cheers Quote

scally Posted October 26, 2008 Report Posted October 26, 2008 Thanks Seatkid, sorry for postin everywhere, this is the first time i have used a forum. I will be taking my gal back to my locla dealer and insist they check again, esp the ARB & trackrod ends, I have already had to thraten them with legal action in the past, esp when they sold me a car with no breaks on as all pads worn to the metal & refused to fix. thanks Quote
