Hi,

Have noticed that the engine when after switching off the ignition makes a strange noise, for a couple of minutes then suddenly stops. I am sure it always did this, except now the noise dosn`t sound as healthy. This will happen even when the ignition switch is turned on then off , and without the engine being started.

Any idesa what it is?

What model/engine do you have?

This could be the little pump in the engine bay - it's called Auxilliary Coolant Pump (or something like that). It runs on after the ignition is turned off, even when the engine is cold, for a few minutes.

The pump is normally fairly quiet - a gentle purring sound. When it gets noisy it can be a sign that it's about to expire.

The unit is located to the back of the engine bay, on the bulkhead, nearside.

Thanks for your reply, it`s a VW 1.9 tdi, Aug 2000.

I was beginning to think you all thought I was mad, the gentle purring sound you mention was the right description for it. The purring has changed into the sound of a cat having it`s nuts chewed.

Yes, it'll be the brushes in the after-run pump. Check faq's for my bodging trick to refit with filed donw angle-grinder brushes, or fork out 70 to 120 smackers for a new one. Relatively easy to fit if you've got small hands. If you haven't (like me!) you'll probably end up with skinned knuckles!

Yes, no problem. Aux heater will kick out after about a minute though, as it relies on the after-run pump to circulate water through it. When you do it, get a couple of ordinary jubilee clips for it. The one clip which you have to squeeze with mole grips or something is awkwards to get at so it makes it easier to put back afterwards.

It also helps to disperse the heat from the cylinder head after a hot shut-down - this is why it runs for a couple of minutes after switching off the ignition. If you ran without the auxiliary pump long term, you risk warping the cylinder head. This is happily very rare with the VW TDI engines.

Hi Guys, very useful article. I have the same problem with the noice of a jet engine underneath the Galaxy. I will have a crack at sorting the problem myself. How long do you think it will last in the present state which is a fair old noise ?

the jet engine noise from the aux heater is the normal sound it makes and shows that it is working..that is if you have one as i dont know what model of galaxy you have.

How come i don't have the jet engine noise, because i always fancied a 'wicked' noise coming from the engine! :D

And yes, i do have a heater in the back with the controls/2 dials above the LHS door in the headlining.

P.S. What's the difference between a booster heater and an auxillary heater?

I have the 1.9tdi Zetec 2003 03 plate Automatic, so do you think I should be having this noise with this model of car ?

If the noise can be heard from the rear wheel passenger side, yep.

Technically speaking, the booster heater comes on as required by the pre-defined temperature settings etc., as long as the engine is running. The auxiliary heater is the same unit but with additional wiring, it's own battery under the driver's seat, and a timer unit built into the clock. You press the button on the clock and it comes on on it's own, you do not need the engine running. It uses the after-running pump and heater fans to distribute the heat.

However in most forums the terms are interchangeable as no-one knows anyone with a timer.....
