NikpV Posted September 7, 2007 Report Posted September 7, 2007 2. Filament lamps with some added xenon it (all over ebay - if you read the descriptions - they give the HID look Yeh , and there was me thinking someone had just touched the Halogens up with a bit of Blue paint :16: actually thats not far from the truth - read the descriptions - the yellow light is filtered out giving the bulbs a bluish look - this is more important to the light colour than the xenon - the xenon's higher heat conductivity allows the filament to run at a higher temp Quote
MadBaz Posted September 8, 2007 Report Posted September 8, 2007 Mine were a direct bulb replacement from Halfrauds @ Quote
big_kev Posted September 8, 2007 Report Posted September 8, 2007 I thought the limit for headlamps was 55w ( although to be honest I have had difficulty finding this stated ) and anything above this was illegal ? Quote
MadBaz Posted September 8, 2007 Report Posted September 8, 2007 I thought the same as yourself but after a bit of googling 60 watt seems to be fine. Quote
Bigjeeze Posted September 8, 2007 Report Posted September 8, 2007 I understand from SK's piece that after market HIDs are now not legal - but if they were fitted as an option to the Galaxy range and there is no difference in the headlamp reflector or lens/glass then surely there should be no problem? Very good point.......I have no idea.........anyone know if this is indeed the case ? Quote
seatkid Posted September 11, 2007 Report Posted September 11, 2007 (edited) The headlamp units for HID and standard halogen are completely different, as the bulbs are completely different design and principle (optically as well as mechanically). The HID units have specific optics for a HID bulb, and have automatic levelling and a wash system must be fitted in order to comply with European/UK regulations. So no you cant fit a HID bulb in a standard headlamp. Detailed explanation about why HID conversion kits are bunkum Edited September 11, 2007 by seatkid Quote
big_kev Posted September 12, 2007 Report Posted September 12, 2007 Yep that's pretty much the way I thought I understood it . Quote

tiny Posted September 14, 2007 Report Posted September 14, 2007 A word of warning for anyone planning to use 100/80w halogen bulbs. Buy plenty, they do not last long at all. The finer element usedin these bulbs have a tendency to burn out much more quickly than other 55/60w halogens. I know because ive used them for years (but i was getting a free supply from my former employers). I've had bulbs last less than a month in a variety of cars. Anyhow my stocks are now exhausted and as my wife works at Aldi, I will be buying some of theirs on Sunday. Quote
Bigjeeze Posted September 14, 2007 Report Posted September 14, 2007 So - Has anyone attempted to buy the necessary components for a Galaxy HID system as a retro fit? IE the real and actual Ford/Seat?VW HID lights as factory fitted - Any idea of the costs involved? Quote
